Trunk water leak fixed - resealed body seams 700 1991

Hi everyone:

I thought I would pass this experience on:

I fixed the water leak in my trunk as proven by the monsoon that we had yesterday - not a drop to be found.

Initially, I resealed my taillights to fix a leaky trunk but that did not solve the problem. I found that water was also leaking in at the body seams near the trunk seal (the seal is OK.) This is where the rear quarter panels are attached to the body via spotwelds. There are seams just below the back window and further down toward the rear of the car. At the factory, these seams are sealed with some sort of compound that eventually dries out and cracks. Water gets in through the cracks, drips into the trunk and settles in the wells on the left and right sides of the trunk. I swabbed a bunch of touch up paint in the cracked areas until they were smooth again. I suppose that silicone would also work. Now if I can just track down the source of the passenger footwell leak...

Yes, the leak is from a vent cover that was used as a vent in the 200 models but not the 700 models. Instead, the 700 was covered with a plastic cover on the inside of the quarter panel. The rubber seal always seems to leak. The best product I found is sealant for windshields (can be found easily). Be careful though, the cover is very hard to remove and easily breaks. Don't break it and have to wait to order a new one while it rains inside your car!

Good Luck and thanks for the tip
