My car's A/T OD solenoid is leaking from the top, under the boot (1992 240), and I'm thinking of replacing it with ipd's block off kit. Anyone here have any experience with it?
Yes, I've eliminated the o'rings as the leak point - fluid is coming from above where the solenoid meets the tranny case.
Also, if my decision is to replace the solenoid, in your opinion where is the best place to get the best part for the best price?
Thanks in advance.

I appreciate the advice, and like the fact that both arguments were presented - for the block off plate and for a new solenoid - and both were well explained.
Since my solenoid is leaking I can't just dremel out the passage, which would be my preference. I will go with the ipd plate to save the $$ - I will probably not miss being able to use the button.
Thanks, again.

I recommend fixing the car the right way -- if that means, in your case, replacing the solenoid, then do it.
I use the 4-3 button shift a lot. But even if you don't use it very often, why give up the ability? There will come a time when you'll want to hold the car in 3rd gear -- whether pulling a trailer, coasting down a long downgrade or having some fun on some twisty mountain road, or just holding it in 3rd a little longer to accelerate onto a highway on-ramp on an uphill stretch of interstate. The 240 engine isn't a powerhouse, and keeping in 3rd can make up for some of its power inadequacies.
Installing the bypass is really going to handicap the car -- you'll be able to manually shift only between OD/4th and 2nd, and there is just too much rpm change between those choices to be useful, not to mention that 2nd is just too low for serious road use -- I use it only to hold back the car when I'm crawling in bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go traffic, or to initially keep the rpms up if I'm manually shifting through all the gears to merge in fast highway traffic.

I agree! It's definitely useful to have the OD bypass in hilly areas where you'd otherwise be riding the brakes.
When I was in this position with our 740, my decision came down to this: The IPD part is really expensive for a piece of metal, and in the grand scheme of things, the replacement solenoid is not much more expensive (~$100 from FCP)... and it's the same amount of labor, face full of gack, and bath of transmission fluid either way! :-)
Incidentally, whatever you end up doing, get yourself a set of GearWrench brand ratcheting box wrenches with the flexible heads to remove the solenoid's bolts... or at least get the individual sizes needed (Lowe's has them individually). I think the sizes needed are 12mm and 13mm. Check the FAQ!

Being a cheep(frugal ?)type rather then buy IPD's OD bypass I instead dremeled out a passage in my existing OD solenoid. This basically accomplishes same thing IPD OD bypass plate does. However in your case as your OD solenoid is leaking from unit itself you can't really modify your OD solenoid as you need to get rid of the leaker. So I guess IPD OD bypass plate makes sense in your particular case. They used to just sell just the plate itself without the instructional how to video. It is simple install so if you can save $$ by just getting the part itself get it that way.

I installed one of the IPD OD bypass plates last year when I did everything else to fix my OD issue. It worked perfectly. I still have the relay in and it will freak me out when I'm doing 75 mph or so and reach down into the cubby hole to get something and see the orange arrow flash on and realize how that would have felt if it had really kicked down at that speed. Maybe I'll remove it this weekend.
Good luck.

When we were younger and pretty stupid, I knew a guy with an '82 245. Auto tranny. In the "over 80mph" speed range, he pushed the OD button. The car got louder and the tach jumped, but that was about it. They can handle it.

"They can handle it."...and then some. On I95 I run my auto up to about 85 in 3rd with regularity. 85mph is pretty much cruising speed, and if you don't get there fast you'll create a honking, cursing pile-up.
I have no qualms with letting it kick-down at any speed. As far as I know Volvo put a rev limiter on there and I figure it knows what it's doing.

Man, how I don't miss THAT! :-)
Here a busy day of traffic is three or four other cars, and you can leisurely bring the 240 up to speed.

The block off/by-pass plate that IPD sells is just the same as dremeling out the passage on the old non-functioning solenoid. This is to say that it will work just fine providing your problem is a dead solenoid and not something gone wrong inside of the box.
Yes, fixing it properly is the best way to go about it but have you priced factory solenoids lately? They list for about $300.00 and my cost on one is around $200.00, pretty spendy in my book. The first thing you have to ask yourself is when was the last time that you actually used the button on the side of the shifter to drop it into or out of overdrive? If the answer is almost never like most of my customers then I would advise you to save the money and just purchase the IPD part or pick up a used one at the bone yard and dremel it yourself and be done with it. I live and work in Orange County, So. Cal and it is pretty flat here so my customers don't even know that there is a button on the side of their shifter. Should you live in hilly country then I would advise you to bite the bullet and fix it right. Should you decide to fix it right then spend the money and get a factory solenoid or one from Nippondenso, same stuff. They cost almost twice what the aftermarket garbage does but the difference is night and day, spend your money once and fix it right.

Hello, I have one that I was going to put on ebay,I am cleaning out my garage. I have lots of volvo parts going on ebay. It is off of a low mileage 740. I have used the ipd block off plate also. the only thing is your od arrow light will stay on unless you remove the bulb.
Thanks

Dennis, thanks, I think I'll stick with the low-tech solution and go with the plate.
You're in the hometown of my Z3 - I've spent many labor day weekends with the Z-car crowd at "Z-Roadster Homecoming". Great time. Ernie
