Gas cap key 444-544

Anybody know how to remove the key cylinder on the Volvo gas cap, the one that is sort of pentagon shaped with a pentagon shaped flap that goes over the keyhole? The metal flap says "Volvo" on it so I'm pretty sure it's OEM.

A locksmith can unlock it in less than 30 seconds. When mine broke, I called AAA and after he took off the cap, I grabbed a phillips and took the back off and removed the locking plate. I never had a key for it.

Don't think it is OEM but is a factory-authorized aftermarket item made by
another company (RASO or some such?) There are lots of them out there.
Do you have the cap off?

      WASO 444-544

The maker is "WASO" I just ran across a spare cap and key set in my parts "tub" while sorting things. I'd agree that the keys are fairly heterogeneous, but I'm sure that the subtle differences make the difference.

        Correct! 444-544

I've experienced several problems with lost keys in these gas caps.
In some cases the keys were lost when the cap was unlocked, which helps
        a lot.
The lock is pretty rudimentary, with cross slats working ILO tumblers.
What I have done is to take them out and fit the slats I had to the key
I had and any I could not get to fit I discarded (although if one were
interested enough he could probably modify them to fit).
That somewhat reduces the "security" of the lock but most folx, even thieves,
don't carry around an assortment of WASO keys so they are probaby deterrent
enough that way. Volvos are pretty hard to siphon from anyway, even with the
best "Oklahoma credit card". What you really want to avoid is having someone
put other stuff in your tank, like sand, sugar, ethanol, etc.

          Locked/Unlocked 444-544

          A little off-topic...
I've always liked these Waso caps as you have to re-lock the removed cap to remove your keys while fueling. I've always liked that little inconvenience as it makes it *very* hard to leave the cap behind when you leave the gas-station.

I'll work with another key I have and see if I can finesse it open. Good point about lockining it in order to keep someone from putting stuff in the tank rather than taking it out, I'm going to be rebuilding the engine soon.

Unfortunately the cap is on. I either need to remove the cylinder so I can take it in and get a key made, or figure out how to get it off without damaging the down spout. Any ideas?

I assume that it is locked then.
They are pretty easy to pick......
Once you get it off you can take it apart and rearrange the "tumblers"
to match some other gas cap key you might have.

My problem is trying to figure out how to get it off with out damaging the downspout. I have a key to a similar lock on my '61, I'll play with that.

I thought somebody may have given you this possible solution. In the diagram, see if you can loosen the hose clip(s) - my 444 has 2. You should be able to pull the filler neck and gas cap off. I did find a WASO key blank on eBay, but did have a working key. Good luck.

              Thanks!
That looks like my best bet. I'm going to call my roadside assistance folks first but if they won't do it yours looks like the way to go
