Gear selector light bulb S90-V90 1995

Does anyone have any experience replacing the gear selector light on the Type II 960, S90?
I ordered the part from Volvo but it doesn't sound like what is described in the FAQ.
Would appreciate any help!
Ryan

When you order the replacement bulb, it accutaly comes as an assembly : bulb, socket and wires. Quite a bit more expensive than just a bulb but that's how it was designed.

Some here have figured out a way to buy a particular radio shack bulb, remove the old bulb and hardwire it into the old socket. I'll let those that have done this explain.

I did it the expensive way and used Volvo parts.

Thanks for the info. As I said, I ordered the part from Volvo, but it only cost around $2.00, so I'm thinking something isn't quite right, even though I was quite explicit in my order as to what I wanted.

When I ordered the replacement, it was quite a bit more that $2. On the 95 960, the bulb itself was not serviceable without replacing the socket and wires. Maybe they changed that in the S90's.

Hmm, interesting. Mine is a '95 (built September of 1994). Volvo sent me only the light bulb for this job and it fit perfectly. I also replaced the light in the center console. I ordered the socket and also ended up replacing just the bulb. That was all it needed. I now have an eerie blue glow in the console box and on the floor of the back seat. Why the entire socket is sold when only the bulb is needed is beyond me. I assume all the Type II 960s and S/V90's are the same in this regard.

I did this repair on my '96 in January - it was quite easy if you exercise patience lifting the plastic of the center console. Instead of an assembly, it is a grain of wheat bulb that pulls out of the lamp socket, like Christmas tree bulbs. I believe the bulb # is in the FAQ, but it sounds like you'll get the right part from Volvo if it is only $2.

Thanks for the reply. I did the repair this afternoon. It just popped right in. The plastic was the real problem. How to get it open without breaking it (cheap Volvo plastic) where there are no visible screws.
Where is the cutoff between this relatively simple construction and the take-the-entire-cockpit-apart-to-change-a-lightbulb version?
