My car that got written off - pics 200

Well. Keep in mind this is amateur work here, never done anything like this before. This is my first car. Here is what happend:

So, after a couple weeks of thinking about what I was going to do with the car, I decided I was going to fix it. I ripped all the crap off and discovered that asshole rust. What a towel rust is. Like, c'mon.

Let's kill all that mofo'n rust:

I did a much better job than the above two pics, but I didn't take pics every lil step ah the way. After grinding down rust to the metal, it becomes time for paint:

The hood I'm going to paint soon:

Then last week, on Thursday I believe... I wanted to see if the car worked..

So I was like awesome, because she started first try, so naturally I ripped around the block like the car is pictured above. It was pretty sweet with the 150lb weight reduction. My car definately turned some heads that day.

I'm still waiting for my rad support/cross piece to dry from paint. Then from there it's just buttoning everything back together.

I love threads like this. Nothing like underhood/body work pictorials. You'll probably end up with a car in better shape than before, considering the rust that was starting here and there etc. It is very easy for people to write off these cars, as they are old and hence fairly cheap. Nice to see someone who begs to differ! :)

Nice work, Amar! How'd the a/c delete go?

I've always wanted to do it but...I've got a '93 and my a/c actually works. I don't use it - it's much more fun to coast with 4-80 a/c (4 windows down, 80 miles an hour) - but it does work and it'd be sacrilidge of some kind to remove a working 240 a/c.

My AC wasn't even working anyways, so I had no problems ripping it all out.

The AC delete was pretty straight forward. Removed the compressor, condensor, the drier reciever and cut the two lines that go to thru the firewall on the pass. side. Probably 50 pounds worth of stuff to remove.

Then the other part is swapping the location of the powersteering pump, which some bracketry is required.

    Hey nice pics.

You should post some of the completed project.

The "above the bumper" hits are always the easiest to fix, but that isn't saying the job you did was easy. It looks like you did a nice job of straightening out what was damaged (which is not easy). Its just that you were fortunate that the collision didn't involved big frame straightening on the lower parts, which tend to be harder to work out. You need bigger pulling power to get that straight.

Measure it out before you bolt it up (both across and diagonally from similar points on each side). Just in case there is some misalingment. However, you can use the hood to align it, if it doesn't fit when you mount it and put it down, then you know that more work is necessary.

If you get stuck and the frame is misaligned (not likely judging from the pics) you can have a frame shop do the straightening, not a big deal.

Again, if you get a chance please post pics once you get it set up. This is a great opportunity for a lot of people to see what the car looks like when a body shop has it. A lot of people freak out when they hear the words "written off", "totaled", "accident", etc. But when all is said and done, most of the stuff that got hit on your car, you could bend by hand, once it was removed from the car. The only thing that makes it strong is that it is bolted to other parts. In other words, even a hit like that, is hardly what I would consider something that compromises the structure of the car, either now or in the future.

the first "updated" post on this thread has a link to what the car is looking like currently.

When I have time I'll edit the post and add the new pics.

      Thanks guys,

Looks like you're making great strides - fine work!

What's giving you trouble in the hood alignment, other than the fact that it's a PITA?

      Offhand, the adjustments are:

Rubber stoppers on the front corners
      Front latch location
      Front latch catch location
Rear hinge to body fore-aft adjustment
Rear hinge to hood fore-aft / left-right adjustment

What's not easy about getting all of those variables to line up? ;)

I had the same problem and am still off by about 1mm in front. Not sure if I'm going to pull it off for painting at this point, so not overly overly concerned yet.

damaged side fender and sheet metal are slightly higher compared to the other side, causing the hood to close properly on one end and be raised up a bit on the other end.

I haven't spent much time aligning it, I'm sure it won't be too much trouble.

        Thanks,

        Amar

That is inspiring to me since I've been fighting rust and the resulting body damage on my brick for years. A friend of mine asked me why I was putting so much work into such an old car. Some people just don't understand...

What kind of black paint did you use? POR 15? I've used so much POR 15 over the years, I should get frequent flyer miles with my future purchases.

Nice work! I had to do a similar job about three years ago - new upper and lower rad support, but the quarters and the hood were OK.

I hope you used fresh coolant on your trip around the block and not the stuff that had a film of black paint on top of it!

I ran straight water, and that coolant also had spraypaint, bit of trans fluid, and all kinds of crap since those buckets have been sitting there...

For the summer I'm going to run approx 60% water and 40% green coolant and add a half bottle of Royal Purple extra cooling coolant stuff - it keeps everything a lot cooler.

A picture is worth a thousand words; here you have presented an eloquent essay on what 'bricking' is all about, IMHO. Thanks for taking the time to record your progress and share it with us.

    Great Job!!!

    Wow!!

Congrats on the resurrection! You definitely get a pat on the back! Plus the pictures are just really interesting. Thanks for those.

For the record, if you drove around in our part of the U.S. you wouldn't turn any heads: the hood, headlights, and front end seem to be optional around here. :-)

    Good luck!

True, especially the neighborhood that I grew up in. I had my own urban assault vehicle when I was a teen, except mine was a Volvo 142.
