You're all somewhat correct, but if I may here's the official poop. First let me digress to the 444 model. The hoodlifter (just called an emblem in Swedish) said 444 on the non-deluxe model (P 44403) and the "swallow" (svalformad) emerged on the deluxe models (P44404). I believe the "swallow" started with the "B" model (Sept. 1950). The "A" model had just the 444 emblem, part number 87630. Of course, it was easy to replace the standard emblem with the swallow and even transplant this onto a newer 544.
Apparently on the B16 PV544 there were 3 variations, likely as Steve suggests depending on availability. They were the svalformad - swallow (part #94442), 544 (#659082) or Sport (#663509). Officially all B18 PV544 had just the 544 emblem (scripted 544 #659082) up to chassis number 419299. Onwards, likely coinciding with the 1965 US/Canada model, the hood side emblem switched to the crested 544 (#671096).
As an aside, never try to smuggle a "svalformad" in your overseas luggage - it looks too much like a Ninja weapon! Thankfully when I was leaving Amsterdam the X-ray technician was as old as I was and bought my 444 hoodlifter explanation - strange but true!
Have a great Easter.
