82 GL Will turn over but won't start, no signal lights, dash lights???!! 200 1982

Hi,
I was almost home and with no warning my signal lights stopped working. Got home, turned the car off, and it would not re-start. The engine turnes over fine, but won't catch. Also bizarre is that when I turn the key to just before ignition position no warning lights come on as they usually would. My signal clickers also continue not to work. Windscreen wipers do work though!? I checked the fuse box and they are all fine. Can anyone tell me what might be the problem???

    UPDATE/EDIT-Correction. 200 1982

I'd say the problem is in the Ignition Switch (voltage routing). The switch has more than one "output" terminal:

#50 powers the starter solenoid, which works,

#X powers fuses 1-2-3, and your wipers work off fuse 2.

#30 powers fuses 11-12-13, which powers "clicker" (11), warning lights and fuel pump relay (13)
(I would have bet on fuse 13 if you hadn't mentioned the failing "clicker".)
EDIT: My money is back on Fuse 13. In double-checking my frayed Clymer Manual '82 diagram, I see I was mistaken about the fuses. The flasher clicker works off fuse 13 along with the warning lights. So if your back-up lights work (fuse 12), then the feed to 11-12-13 from Ignition Switch is OK.

    EDIT: Wrong from here down...
So it looks like no power from Switch terminal #30. All the switch wires are plugged into a module that is fastened to the key/lock unit with 2 screws.

Here's what the switch looks like:

      I shoulda known better... 200 1982

...a fuse or fuse holder contact is a much more likely suspect than the Ignition Switch, even though they have been known to go bad.

Stronger glasses might have helped with those faded old diagrams too.

        I shoulda known better... 200 1982

        Hi Bruce,

I second your advice to check the fuses. This very trouble stalled my daughter's 84 just last Sunday. When I arrived on the scene, I went through the spark/fuel/compression routine with my son-in-law sitting in the driver's seat doing the cranking for me.

But if I had just climbed in myself and had my wits about me, I would have known it was fuse 13, as the warning lights failed in lamp test, the turn signals didn't operate, and I'd known from a previous experience with an 83, the fuel injection depends on power from one of those fuses.

Like B.C. suggested, I rolled the fuse, but the end cap had already severed from the fuse element (ceramic euro fuse) and a nice new fuse awaited in the spare-keeper place at the bottom of the panel.

The only proof-positive way to test those fuses is with a meter or light, checking the voltage at the panel clip load side. Even the most youthful eyes will not catch all of the potential ways electricity can be blocked.

      HI,
I did check all of the fuses in the fuse box in the drivers side wall. Are there any other fuses I could check? Thanks

Checking a fuse means putting a fingertip on a fuse and rotating it while leaving it between its end holders.

Those rascals can look just fine and either have oxidized ends or be actually blown. BTDT

Some of them can be hot, so let a cooling interval pass before doing them.

The only other fuse is the 25-amp under hood fuse, but I think the 1982 doesn't have one.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

When you figure this out let me know what it was because I have the same car, and because of my luck im sure I will run into this sometime in the future.

I took out each Fuse and steel wooled them and the connections. Fuse #13 was definatly corroded on one end so I replaced it. Bingo everything worked again!!! One interesting note is that before this happened by left signal was ticking twice as fast (double time). Now it is normal again. I guess that could be a good warning signal for this problem. Thanks very much for your help!!!
            Jon
