Some of us change the brushes, drill out the crimped eyelet and solder a new set in for a couple bucks. If you have experience repairing instead of swapping parts, it may be because you have more time than money. Without that experience, the time to learn may be offset by the reasonable cost of the replacement module.

On these vehicles the voltage regulator and brushes are an assembly which screws onto the back of the alternator. They are replaced as a unit. Bosch ones can be bougth for under $30, or ScanTech for under $20. Personally I would pay the extra $10 for the Bosch part.

No, you simply remove the two screws that hold in the brush holder assembly and replace it as a unit. Although the brushes are available seperately I have never known anyone to replace just them individually. I have replaced just the brushes on other alternators, i.e. Toyotas and the like, and in that case it is just a simple case of unsoldering the old ones and soldering in the new ones. The only tricky part is keeping the springs under the brushes compressed while you unsolder and resolder. On the Toyotas it was a deal where there was a hole drilled through the brushes and you simply compressed them, slid the pin through, soldered them, and pulled the pin.

    Good luck,
    Mark
