Strange connector 200

I have found a connector on the 79 242, B21F. It is located on top of the engine attached to the valve cover bolt, second from rear, intake side. Not the Aux Air. This has several connection slots and almost made me think of the diagnostic unit on my 89. It has a wiring harness going behind the engine. The top of the connector is open. It looks like something should be plugged into it. Seemed like it only had a couple of wires but not real sure. Looked like a headlight connector but bigger..Any ideas??

    ANSWER Strange connector 200

this is a diagnostic port...once used by the now retired Volvo techs.

This post has been marked as an answer to the original question.

Thank you very much.. It was bothering me since I could not identify it. Is there a way to use this? What diagnostic tool is required?

I think it filled the need for a timing light and a RPM readout

At the time the need was for a more sophisticated and accurate means of setting ignition timing than the way most of us do with a strobed light on the crank pulley. That need was created by the newly established emissions standards and expensive catalysts easily nullified by inexact spark timing. The diagnostic unit was termed a 'monotester' which combined a dwell/tach/timing angle meter with electrical reference to crank position for comparison with ignition time. What killed the dinosaurs? Emissions.

There are still some dinosaurs around 200

          I think Lucid knows/remembers. :)

The wire goes down to what appears to be a sensor that projects into the area behind the flywheel. So it may be for timing/rpms.

But when I replaced my clutch, I didn't notice anything on the flywheel eg. magnet that the "sensor" might pick-up.
