Drop link torque setting? 200

Replacing the drop links on my 91 240 and have a torque question neither Haynes nor Bentley touches.......

What is the proper torque for the lower bolt on the drop link? The one that attached the single round bushing to the control arm......not the one on the top of the drop link that holds the two top bushings and sway bar together.

Thanks for the help!

Dave

    Drop link torque setting? 200

    Dave:

Since the lower link bolt is in "shear" rather than "tension", torque is of lesser importance. If I recall correctly, the nut on the lower link bolt has a friction/captive fit so torque is not that important to keep the nut from loosening up.

What I did was to "snug" it up, verify that there was no slop between the a-arm ears and the link, then I cranked it to 25 Foot Pounds. So far, 11K miles and no problem.

    Hope the above helps.

What is a drop link? if you are refering to the front suspension then all that is there is a control arm attached to the front crossmember by the front bushing. The rear attaches to the rear bushing bracket by the rear bushing. The ball joint attaches the control arm to the strut. Not sure which so here. Front control arm to crossmember, 55Ft. Lbs., Rear bushing-41 Ft. Lbs. Ball joint bolts to strut- 44 Ft. Lbs. Ball joint to control arm-85 Ft. Lbs. Let me know which..I am still not getting the right one, am I?

      Max:

In part, I may be to blame for the miscommunication. In this case, the "drop link" is an ancient term for the sway bar link(s) that tie the sway bar to the lower front A-arms. To be more specific, he is talking about the lower bolt/nut torque that connects the sway bar link to the A-arm.

One of these days I'll remember to check FCP Groton for the proper modern component terms!

      My bad

      Max,

The drop link connects the sway bar to the control arm. Two bushings horizontal on the top, one on each side of the sway bar, and one vertical at the bottom.

I think Jorrell hit it on the head, but thanks for the help!

        Dave:

As I just responded to Max, how about we replace the ancient term of "drop link" with "sway bar link"! Guess I've been reading too many books about sub-50's cars!
