240 runs rough/quits 200 1988

My daughters 1988 240 4 cyl. has been running great since the last issue this board helped me fix. Today she was on the way home from work and had only gone about 1 mile when it started to run rough then it quit. The fuel pump is running and I suspect bad gas. Dry gas seemed to help and it ran fine for 6-8 miles. I was following my wife home and it quit again. Are fuel pumps intermittent before they die or do they go all at once? Any other ideas would be appreciated. I'm still not giving up on bad gas/water in gas but I couldn't get it started again and pushed it to a parking lot. Any ideas appreciated.

Since fuses are cheap, I replaced them all. One that was fairly new fell apart soon after it was removed. Unfortunately, I had already removed all of them and am not sure which circuit it came from.

The distributor cap had been recently replaced but I checked it too.

So far it is running fine. I have not had much chance to drive it and am limiting my daughter to daylight driving with that car till it proves itself.

Once again, this board rocks!! Thanks guys.

I would lift the distributor cap and look for condensation under the cap - better yet change the distributor cap even if it's a cheapy from the auto store or wal-mart. Check the coil wire connections and make sure they're tight - perhaps pull one terminal at a time and wire brush a little then reinstall. If it was running good, then rough, it could be gas but I'd suspect electrical first as in getting fire to the plugs especially if it was damp outside at the time.

I have replaced the inline fuse behind the battery....that was the fix last summer. I'll try the other suggestions as soon as I'm able to get it home, probably Thursday evening.

    Thanks

Please check and clean the # 4 and 6 fuses or any others that might be suspicious. These little things can cause more trouble than anything. The second thing is usually the fuel pump relay. Inside passenger side, behind glovebox. Remove box and look for white relay. Jump #30 and 87 on the relay connector to bypass it and turn the pump on. If your car has less than 1/2 a tank of gas then you might try filling it up and see if that works. If so then you have a bad prepump in the tank. Also famous for going out. They also have a small hose connecting the prepump to the metal line coming out of the tank. It seems to develop holes and will not work properly. Other than that the last thing that I can think of is the Flywheel sensor. Not lilkly but still they do go out..Max

That would have to be alot of bad gas. I've seen volvos sit for 5yrs with less that 1/4tank and with some starting fluid fire right up, ran a little rough but ran.

A fuel pump can be intermittent or die altogether, there is no one set way. It happens so rarely though, compared to problems like the fuel pump relay, the wiring for its power under the hood and 25A fuse, you'll want to investigate the simpler, less expensive possibilities first. You want to be the one to avoid the usual approach to do it yourself service, that of guessing and replacing the part Harry replaced to fix a similar issue, especially with something like a fuel pump. The odds in a 240 volvo favor electrical.

Good advice - start with the small items 200 1988

Kyle240 is right - start small.

If it were my car I would:

      1. Check 25 amp fuel fuse behind battery. Replace fuse (cheap) and clean or replace fuseholder if necessary. Bet you'll find a lot of corrosion in there if this hasn't been done before - BTDT :)

      2. Check fuel pump relay.

      3. Clean fuses as Max suggested.

After doing all that, then you might consider the 2 pumps or the small hose for the prepump.

      Good luck,

      Jim
