Had a call from a friend the other day .... a guy he knows was looking to get rid of his 145 "free to a good home".
Turns out it's a genuine 1968 145S, which he purchased 2nd hand in 1971 with 40,000 miles on it. At 180,000 miles the B18 was removed, & replaced with a B21 (mounted vertically I gather, using the B18 sump & mated to the original M40 box). It has also had a custom inlet manifold made for it, to mount the twin SUs. Now has 280,000 miles on it, and was in regular use until parked up about 18 months ago.
I haven't seen it yet, but apparently it has no rust of any consequence - and all it needs to get it mobile is a battery, an alternator bracket, and the bush/mount where the clutch cable goes through the firewall ....
I don't know how many 1968 145S's made it to Australia, but seeing there were only 9000-odd built worldwide it must be a pretty rare thing over here. How could I say no ? :o)
Just have to arrange a trailer & go pick it up one night next week. Will post some pictures when I get it home.

Wow! Awesome, mate! Congrads. It is nice to know people are only willing to give or sell their Vintage Volvo to someone they know who will take extra care of their "baby." That was exactly the way it was for me.
The gentleman who was the previous owner of my car was only willing to sell it to someone who would promise not to part it out and continue to care for it. He literally made me promise to him that I would (he was getting much too old to tend to it himself)!
We all can't wait to see the pictures. What color is it?
(Once I get a digital camera, I will post the cute 1973 California White 142 that I have as well)

Picked up the "new" 145S last night ..... turns out it's a 1969 model, not a 1968, but is in etraordinary condition for it's age, really.
202,000 miles on the clock (& only 7,000 since 1996 !), straight, one rust hole in the LHR door frame you can't fit a pinky through, and all original panels & (faded) paint. Also has a complete service & repair history since the guy I got it off bought it in 1971 - including a record of nearly every tank of fuel he ever put in it !!
Having not been started for 18 mionths, it also comes with a thriving spider population in the engine bay ... :o)
On an initial look-over, it shoyuldn't be hard to get going again. Lots of little tidyup jobs required, but with a car nearly 40 years old that's to be expected.

Nice looking car - I have a similar coloured 142S.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of the B21 engine? Are they a worthwhile replacement for the B20 regards potential power output?

I suspect it was just done as a cheaper option than rebuilding the original B20B.
A stock B21A will make significantly less power than a stock B20B I would have thought.
On the plus side, parts are readily available & cheap ... and I could alwys drop a B23 into it I suppose !
Personally, I would rather it still had the orginal motor.... but one can't argue when it's free :o)

My source shows a figure of 9,200 68 145s. How many of those were RHD??

hahaha, i've never been able to call a volvo a her. everyone looks at me wierd when i say "the old guy", till i show them the emblem on the grill. then they get it.
nice score on the free car.

At's are a kinder gentler Volvo,I call them 'her/she'.
Tranny swaps can get into shaky ground,however
with She-he's,and He-she's...LOL...

Free is the right price for a 140!
two were offered to me that way, one I ended up paying for to snag it from someone else. The other one wasn't blue & needed a clutch, 100+ miles away.
B21 sounds interesting, let us know how SHim pans out.
