My experience with aftermarket headlamp lenses; late 960, S90, V90? 900 900

A couple of weeks ago I posted a message asking about this.

Fortunately Paulii posted an answer suggesting that I check LampsandLenses.com.

They did not show any headlamp lenses on the web site, so I called them and it turned out that they had them earlier but had gone out of stock and a nes shipment was due in a day or two. I had them ship me a pair of these for $150.

I removed and rebuilt the headlamp assys with the new lenses and I must say that they are outstanding lenses. I was delighted to find that they were an E-Code lens, which is, IMO, superior to the DOT design beam pattern. Although the OEM DOT lenses were pretty good as far a DOT lenses go, these aftermarket E-Code lenses are even better.

The lenses come with new clips and a new seal, but the seal is a strip rather than a ring, and looked like it would be a very tight fit in the headlamp assy. I also liked the original elastomer better than the aftermarket seal supplied, so I used the original ring seal renewed with some Sil-Glyde.

I wanted to post these findings for those who are interested in alternatives to buying new headlamp assys at ~$300+ each.

Excellent information, many thanks. I have a 1997 965 and was worried about headlight lenses, what with gravel roads and "lenses not available separately" from the Volvo dealer.

Then I saw a BB post many moons ago re: E-Code lenses. That Q was why is the beam design different and it is OK to use. Poster had bought one lens, maybe on eBay. So I stored that info just in case I needed one.

Then last Jan. the car was struck by a hapless Tahoe. Low speed angle hit from right in front of the right wheel aimed towards the car front center. Took out all six front lights. After all was said and done and paid by the attacker, I kept the lights what weren't demolished. The head lights were OK except for the plastic mounting "ears".

So instead of my buying a whole new unit for $397 each, I have a good lens in stock. If they are used and broken, lampsandlenses.com are on my Good Guy list.

    Regards,

    Bob

You also might want to give headlight protectors a try.
I was going to get these in case other things quit breaking long enough for me to be able to buy them: www.autotrimdesign.net/detail.jsp?item=IHP-VLVO-1012&category=6756
They aren't cheap, but then neither are new lenses every six months.
      Enjoy!
