Rear Main Seal 900

Hi all
1991, 940SE. Separated engine and transmission to replace the leaking main seal. I stopped further because I need an advice if I should remove the seal housing. I have the gasket for that housing. Will it be easier to install rear main seal if I remove the seal housing. Since this is the first 'BIG' job, I am not sure which way I should go. Please advise.
Thankful as always.
Ram

Take this for what it's worth...

I have found that freezing a seal helps with install. I'm sure there is a bit of contraction possibly allowing for a less troublesome seating. My experience with two front crank seals has led to this opinion

I have done one and that is with the seal housing removed. The seal is large and would be difficult to install on the car, at least the seal I had. I ended pressing the seal in, between two flat pieces of hardwood and got the top surface flush with the seal housing.

Read the FAQ procedure and make sure you use a razor to separate the oil pan gasket from the seal housing.

      Dear Javalion,
I should have read your post before seal installation. But it is too late now. I did pressed the seal in the housing before installation because for me it was impossible to install with the housing attached. Despite best efforts I can tell the seal is 1/32" more deep on one side. I have not installed the transmission yet but I will post back if it leaks and all the efforts are gone...Would you please shed more light on
"Read the FAQ procedure and make sure you use a razor to separate the oil pan gasket from the seal housing". I have not done any razor thing.
      Thanks

If the seal is not in straight, parallel and perfect, install a new one. I hate seals and I have done a bunch. The rear main seal is just bigger and tougher. I bought two seals in case I ruined one and I did. Below is some advice from me and others.

Looking at the photo, the bottom of the seal carrier is against the oil pan gasket and you want to avoid damaging that gasket. Since the gasket is old and hard, apply some RTV to help seal between the oil pan gasket and the carrier.

I too have done it both ways on the Volvos and I prefer leaving the housing in place. I look at it as an unneeded extra procedure that required additional time in removing that pesky paper gasket.

If you remove the seal and find a lot of build up on the crank that you can not get off with something like lacquer thinner then it would be best to remove the housing so that you can get at the crank to clean it properly.

    Either way good luck.

I've replaced the rear main seal both ways. You will probably find it easier to replace the rear main seal by removing the seal housing, replacing the rear main seal, and then installing the assembly.

      Hi John,

Good to see your post. I had not thought that the seal was replacable without taking off the housing since the only ones that I have done were during a teardown. I'm going to practice on the engine stand before going under the 944.

      Hope you are doing well,
