Cold morning start squeel from engine Help!! S90-V90 1998

On cold mornings when I start my car everything is fine for 2 minutes. Then a low squeel starts from the mortor. It is coming from the passenger side. The pitch of the squeel stays constant as you rev the motor gently. I sprayed belt dressing to the belts. This has not helped. As soon as the temp. needle hits Normal the squeel goes away in one second. Yesterday I found a sweet spot in the RPM range. If I hold the RPM's at 1,200 the squeel goes away. What do you thing belt or water pump or Power steering pump. I was told from IPD volvo speedshop that if the sound goes away I should not be too concerned. Also after I sprayed the belts with dressing I smelled burning rubber for a few seconds while stopped at a red light. Any ideas, Thank you

I have a 940 that did this. Primarily, I heard it "chirp" when starting and shutting off the engine. Then occasionally, it would squeal for a minute when coming off a highway run. Finally, the water pump seal went. Turns out it was the water pump. Apparently, it only squealed at low rpms (startup and shutdown).

You might try loosening off the belt and turning your waterpump by hand. When I removed the faulty one, it squeaked when slowly rotating it.

My approach to this would be to get a mechanic's stethescope and listen to the bearings on all the items at the front of the engine.

I'll bet one or more of the idler pulleys for either the serpentine belt or the timing belt is demanding attention.

The top plastic cover will need to come off to check the timing belt pulleys.

Don't ignore this as a belt failure can ruin the engine. The timing belt cause is obvious as this is an interference engine. There has been at least one report here on this site of a serpentine belt break getting into the timing belt area and causing it to fail.

Belt dressing is for old fashion leather belts as used on old farm and industrial equipment. It won't renew a dried out old rubber belt.

      What jbowers said.

You've got a bearing going out and you need to find out which one it is fast. A mechanics stethoscope is the best way. Check ALL the pulleys on the serp system and MOST importantly, on the timing belt system. Take the plastic cover off and check all the bearings and the tensioner a.s.a.p.

Hello, I can't believe IPD told you to ignore the noise. If something is sqealing, failure is not far behind. I agree with all the posters. It could be a simple pulley at 50.00, but if it lets go It will cost thousands if it is anywhere near your timing belt. Pauli Check the front of your alt. for black dust as well, it could also be the tensioner is not giving enough tension on the serp. belt.

Just to add to the misery, we had a client come in with same complaint. We removed the Serpentine belt and the noise was still there. Bottom line, the Timing belt tensioner was siezed, the timing belt would slide over it and heat it up, then it would break loose and turn. That guy was lucky.

Hello, Unbelievable! Never caught one before it went that bad. I change them everytime I do a belt now. I never used to, but I don't want any customer of mine toasting an engine because I didn't change the two idler pulleys. Its 200.00 Vs 2500.00 to 3000.00 without. Education is sometimes cruel. Cold morning start squeel from engine Help!! > What about the 5cyls S90-V90 1998

              Hey Paulii,

Would you change them on a '98 S70 T-5 every time the t-belt is changed? Looks like I'm buying an S70 and it needs it's first T-belt. I have been told the pulleys for the t-belt and serp belt should be good until the next belt change at 224K km. Maybe they're not as prone to failure on the 5 cyls...

Hello, That is up to you. If your the one driving it and are good with what noises your engine is making then I would say don't do them. If someone else is driving it and you want peace of mind, replace. Pauli
