Start issues 200 1989

Currently I am driving a 1989 240 wagon which has developed intermittant no start problems. The car currently has 250 thousand kms and has been fantastic to own. I have recently replaced the wire, cap, rotor and the fuel pressure regulator was replaced two years ago. The battery is fine. The crank sensor was replaced with a good used one three years ago. Uplugging the AMM did nothing I am thinking it might be the fuel pump relay because of how intermittant it seems. Does NAPA carry these. Because I live in Canada order one from Fcp Groton does not make economical sense. Anybody got any ideas.....

The three parts most likely to leave you stuck are:

Fuel Pump Relay

25A fuseholder behind battery

Crank sensor

For now, assume the crank sensor is ok, as long as you can see that it's not losing its insulation.

Get all of them at the dealer. The fuseholder is $3-4 USD. The relay maybe $40 from the dealer, but at least it's a real Volvo one, not an aftermarket unit. I've seen a couple aftermarket ones die a premature death and at least one new unit that did not work right, at least not reliably.

I'm sure NAPA lists the parts, but whether they stock them is a different story. They're worth a shot. IF not, try dealer parts dept, they won't kill you for these parts.

It could be the fuel system relay or the 25 amp spade fuse near the battery. Test the relay by jumping on the left side fuses 4 and 6, this bypasses the relay and forces the pumps to run. Re-solder the circuit board for the relay or replace.

Check the connections at the battery and 25 amp fuse for corrosion and good clean contact. Dan

IF the 25 amp blade-style fuse (on the driver's side between coil and battery) is the culprit, replace the fuseholder as well as the fuse with a unit rated for 25 A or higher. These commonly corrode and then overheat. A new fuse holder is under $10 at NAPA.

Had a no start problem this morning on an '88 240. Pulled the fuel relay, cranked, engine started and ran for a second. Plugged in the fuel relay, cranked, engine started and w/o any problem. Don't know how, but this "trick" worked! Good luck!

Sometimes all it takes is to pull the connectors off and back on again to get a fresh new contact. It still may need to be replaced or resoldered as these are usually intermittent problems and may not yet be solved. Dan

Hmmm... for insurance, find the Don Foster posts re re-soldering the fuel pump relay, and proceed with yours. The handling may have been enough to jostle yours into working briefly.
