Check the grounds for your ignition system.

Look in the 700 faq - My '90 744 stalled when I put the high beams on!

I found bad grounds on the power stage, ABS, and a couple of other spots.

A good idea is to clean all grounds and connections in the engine compartment.

There is a good discussion of connections at Swedish Embassy.

I did one plug each week so that if the car acted up, I knew which connection to blame.

Only because you mentioned the Headlamps (also all caps is hard to read),
Check wires that come off the positive battery post...not the big one that goes to the starter but the smaller ones that go to the 25 amp fuse and the connector on the rail with the black cover.

Also open the hood up at night with the car running and see if you see any blue electric traces racing around the engine bay.

What kind of Spark plug wires did you use. I had this exact symptom with brand new Magnecors in my 89. Night viewing revealed the bad wire.

Why oh why don't they make 240s anymore :(

    1. Lose the all-caps, we do not need to be yelled at.

    2. Many mechanics are better with newer cars, not considering what can deteriorate over a long time, like the hose in the on-tank pump. The pump may be just fine, just the hose or sock filter. Check by learning if the problem goes away whe the tank is full.

    3. Does your car have a crank position sensor? Check there, on top side of bell housing between block and firewall, for failing wires.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

My 1980 245 DL was giving me some similar trouble. It turned out that my intank fuel pump filter was fouled, and the short rubber fuel line that connects the top of the pump assembly to the bottom had also deteriorated. I replaced those parts, reinstalled and resealed the pump assembly into the tank, and finally replaced a couple of the rubber fuel lines running from the top of the pump - they had deteriorated as well. She runs great at cruising speeds now.
