I "upgraded" from my 88 NA 240 auto to a 93 NA 245 manual. I loved the old car, and am pleased as punch with the new one, despite the usual "getting the car to my liking" repairs.
One thing that I have noticed is that it that it seems significantly noisier, more ambient noise at all speeds.
Is this a general rule? I can't say for sure because too many variables in comparing my old and new 240s. The new has a sunroof (not fun in the winter, but come spring - woo hoo!), and power windows, and a manual transmission.
Speaking of sunroofs, mine drains to just above the hinge in the drivers door frame - is this the stock place? Seems odd, since it is generating a fair amount of ice on the rubber tube that passes the electric wires into the door...
As some of you might remember, I just had a new blower motor put in. I can't hear it at setting 1, and don't feel any air being pushed. At speed, air comes through, but I think that is because the vents are "open". I've tried turning off the demister, turning off the floor, and closing all but one of the vents and tried to feel air at 1, but nothing noticeable comes out if the car is stationary. Bad install? On 2, 3, and 4, it is audible and definitely working - in fact, on 4 it is like a hurricane. Well, maybe not in air volume or air velocity, but it sure is loud.
Anyway, an thoughts on any of the questions above would be appreciated.

Yes, the tip of the tube should be sticking out of the "A" pillar lower door frame. Should have a drop of water after a rain. Can't help with the icing problem, no experience here in Houston, TX.
There are drains at the rear corners of the sunroof, too. On a sedan they go into the trunk, "Y" connected to the rear window drains. On a wagon, I don't know. Look around underneath when you have the car on a rack sometime, maybe they are in the wheel wells.
Good Luck,
Bob

PS Sounds like you got a great car, be sure to check out the Zero Mile List for initial servicing.

Yes, wagons are a bit noisier than sedans, as explained in other post. As mentioned, #1 blower speed should be "just" noticable. Tell us more about the sunroof....stock (like those on sedans)...aftermarket....or welded in by DIY ? Any pics ? Congrats on purchase !
My fantasy Brick: two (actually 3) door wagon, with sunroof, lowered roof line (like 80's Bertone), 5 spd manual, turbocharged, virgo wheels, painted greenblue mit tan interior.
Enjoy !

Isn't this a 1800ES you speak of? :-P

No. I've always enjoyed th ES (shooting brake).
Saw a 245, converted to a two door, 283 stuffed under the hood, at our local cruze in. Came out of NY, around Kinmgston area....I think. Going another step, is where the Bertone height & sun roof come in.
Nice pic of ES....yours ?
Enjoy !

Here's another 3-door wagon Volvo:

Well, it does have 2 doors in the rear, but I think it still counts as a 3-dr!.
I've seen several 3 door 140/240 wagon conversions. And they never look quite as good as you think they should. The glass proportions on the side oare off somehow. With coupe doors in, there's just a weird med/short/long glass pattern down the side.

My Volvo friend in Sacremento is doing up a 143 and
it looks like it will have very long glass for the rear 1/4 glass.

My '91 w/ roof rack is about as perfect as possible. Really runs like it's '91 all over again. There is some wind noise but really not much above 60 and significant road/tire noise although my new yokohama avid trz's aren't bad. It is a little louder than my previous ride a '89 244. Fan noise on #1 negligiable, #2 noticable but effective, #4 do not use.

Yes wagons are noisier than sedans because of the larger interior area and the fact you don't have a trunk soaking up the road noise. A 93 wagon will be quieter than the 88 due to improved sound deadening and insulation. Wagons are great but sedans are definitely quieter. Dan

I laid a thick blanket in the back of my wagon and it really cut down on the road noise. Cheaper and less work than going through the car and soundproofing it and if I get stranded, i will always have something to keep me and family warm until help comes :) Hopefully, that will never be the case though!

Sunroof on a wagon? Interesting, those are supposedly as rare as hen's teeth. Are you in the US?

That's why I was so excited about the car. Plus, it is in very nice condition. I had spent about 2 years looking for a 245 manual with a sunroof.

My 82 245 is as loud as it could be, road noise, vibration, roof rack rattle. If its on the car it seems to make noise.

I do not know about sedan but wagon is pretty noisy.Noise from tires is most prominent ,roof rack is also contributing factor and then there is wind noise .
I can hardly listen the engine and stereo is hardly audible above 60mph.

I had a '92 244 prior to my '90 245. There is a bit of additional ambient noise in a wagon as compared to the sedan, in my experience. Both were automatics, so I can't comment on transmission noise. Some additional noise from the roof rack, if installed, it likely to be expected. When I have the yakima bars on top, there is a definite whistling at 60mph and above. I'd guess it's a little easier to hear a straining fuel pump in the wagon.
The wagon interior is a larger volume in general, and you don't have the trunk to trap some sounds at the back of the car as in the sedan.

when i went from my 87 245 to my 90 244 i noticed that my 244 was as quiet as a benz inside

wouldn't a good coat of rubberized undercoat in the wheel wells be an economical upgrade for noise control? if there was any originally from the dealer it probably would have worn off years ago, i would think.
