M40 stuck in 3rd 120-130

Won't release, engine on or off. Engine speed makes no difference, vehicle speed makes no difference.

Had been shifting harder lately, pretty sure the syncro's must be a thick paste by now but thought I would check the forum.

Sound familiar anyone? Any fix less than a rebuild?

If the shifter was a bit loose in the top of the trans, then the selector rail can be overdriven into the gear. When that happens one of the three shift plates that engage the synchro ring can pop out of place, preventing the clutch hub from returning. That means dismantling the gearbox. Hopefully it is simpler, like George mentioned.

There are a couple things that could do that that have nothing to do with
the gears or synchros. My guess is that a detent ball has malfunctioned or
gotten into the wrong place. I would guess that if you pull the tranny and
take the lid off it will be in the lid or in the actuating rods or forks.
I'm afraid you are going to have to bite the bullet! At least the weather
has warmed up some!

Hopefully it is something like George is talking about, but......

I had the same thing happen once and the problem was that the synchro was so badly worn that it got stuck onto the gear in a position that wouldn't allow the gears to UN-mesh. I got a little heavy-handed trying to get it out of gear and ever so slightly bent the fork, which ended up causing me more trouble than the bad syncro itself.

Dragging clutches and worn synchros can certainly motivate you to be heavy-handed.
Mostly I just bent the stub handle coming out of the tranny lid. The chrome
part is really stiff!
