VOLVO 960 valves clatter when accelerating 900 1994

I have a 1994 Volvo 960 that the valves clatter when accelerating. When stating with the engine under no load and accelerating in park there is no clatter at all.It has 125,00 miles on the engine and I use Castrol Syntec 10-30 oil, high test gas and just had it tuned up.. I just purchased this car a month ago and am wondering if this is a characteristic of this engine with the miles it has on it.
Any help will be appreciated.

I am not familiar with that engine but if it is like the 4 cylinder, you can adjust the valve clearances with a shimm kit. You can rent one from IPD and you also pay for any shims that you might use. It's not a difficult job if that engine allows for that type of adjustment.

HUmm my 96 965 runs very quiet at idle and at speed. It does have a cam whirring sound at speed but not a valve rattle. The only rattle I get is first thing in the AM on cold AM's. And that is for only a few secs. Did the car have Synth oil in it when you got it or did you changed it (dino to synth) out and now have the rattle valve noise? IF so in time the valves with clean out and flush and you will get a smoother quiet eng. You just have broken up gunk in eng and it is getting in the valves and rattleing. If so keep up and more so on oil/filter changes while it is flushing it out. And make sure that the gunk is coming out of the crank case/oil pan. It can and will clog up the oil sump screen. Hense oil starving the eng.

BTW you state you tuned it up? the 2.9L I6 is very easy to get the plugs tight but still still loose on. And the coils do not always seat. And wires can get messed up for them. All these might cause a percived rattle as the spark will be off its game and weak or arching to places it should not.

Are you sure it is the valves and not the pistons detonating early? You may have some carbon buildup in the combustion chambers that is causing ping. Valves don't care about engine load and would chatter at any speed.
Check the wiring to the knock sensors and make sure they are working. Are there any codes stored in the computer?
If you are not familiar with code reading, go to the 700/900 FAQ section and start reading.

If the valves are pretty quiet when the cars idleing I'd say check the cams and make sure they are dialed in properly. If there's alot of valve chatter at idle I'd say you probally need to have the oil pan pulled and the seals in the pan replaced.

Are you sure it is the valves? Things that I have found rattling on my car under acceleration have been; the transmission cooler lines, there are metal clips to hold them together, power steering cooling loop, heat shield on the cat and the rear most muffler band. Make sure you exhaust is not in contact with any body parts. One more thing how are the motor mounts? Are the wire cables loose or tight. It could be bottoming out on the cross member.

If you are convinced it is the valves, have a mechanic attach a gauge to read the oil pressure. There are certain minimum readings based on engine speeds. Maybe there is some history on your car in regards to the head that you may not know. There was a problem with the earlier models with the oil pump, the pressure valve was made of plastic on some. My 94, built in 9/93 was made with a metal piston. It could be the take up seal like Poolman says too.
