Speedometer gear in tranny. How to fix? 200 1983

Hello fellas. This is a tough one. Speedometer appears to be good and I put a new cable on my daughter's '83 245GL and still not working. Odd thing is that when I secure the cable on the tranny end it never seems to tighten even though I have run out of threads. It stays loose. Does this mean the mechanism the cable is attached to is busted? How do I remove this and put a new one in? Also, how do I find the part and where and what is it called. FCPGroton, dealership, or IPD? Please tell me this is easy and I do not have to remove the tranny!!!!! Anyway, my daughter is now driving the car quite proudly but has no speedometer working. AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT IT MEANS WHEN A 16 YEAR OLD DRIVES WITHOUT A SPEEDOMETER. $$$$$$$$$$$$$ TICKETS AND $$$$$$$$$$$$$ INSURANCE. HELP HELP. I NEED STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR DUMMIES. THANKS.

    it never seems to tighten

I think Trev is on the right track. Is the retainer missing? If it is, that would cause the condition you describe.
I misplaced this very part when I installed the M46 in my 242. I made one from a piece of stiff plumber's strap after realizing that the similar part for the M45 was different enough that it wouldn't work for the M46.

Hey thanks. Weather has been too cold to get back to it. I do think that I lost that little retainer out in the driveway. I still have the screws. I did think about driving and holding the cable end to see if it turns. I would rather not have to take that gear out.

Disconnect the cable from the speedometer in the dash. While driving slowly, reach under and feel the tip of the cable to see if it is turning. If it is turning then the dash speedo has a problem or the cable wasn't seated properly in the speedo.

If it isn't turning then the problem is with cable or tranny speedo gear.

On my car, the gear is just held in with an allen head screw that holds a triangular plate butted against a flat in the gear to keep it in and prevent it from turning. Is that piece missing?

Without the plate (make your own) the gear should pull out for examination. O-rings prevent it from leaking.

A Haynes or Bentley manual should have instructions.

    Hi!

What is the transmission type? You must check that the cable is fitted correctly in the both ends. Also check that the cable is suitable to this tr/ speedom. system. speedom. has used VDO and Yazaki. it is quite rare that the tr. gear brokes. Those gears has several types, dependes gearbox type, and rear end ratio. You can chance it, without loosing tr. If you know tranny type and rear end ratio, I can tell the both gears colour and teeth number and part number.
