Does M45 fit a B20? Quick answer needed! 140-160 1973

Hi, I'm watching an auction and need a quick answer please. Can an M45 transmission out of a 164 work in a 140 with minimal problems? Direct fit?

Thanks.

Does M45 fit a B20? Quick answer needed! 140-160 1973

In general, ANY tranny fitted to a 164 cannot be bolted to a B20 because
the B30's bolt circle is about an inch bigger than the B20, even though they
look a lot alike. There were a VERY few M410s with special bellhousings fitted
to B20s for a few 1800s but those cannot be bolted to the B30. So you would
NOT find them in a 164.

M45's did come from the factory attached to B20 motors, but only for a limited time during the 1975 240 production cycle. An M45 won't bolt to a bellhousing where an M40/41 was. It takes a special bellhousing, and those 1975 bellhousings are rare, ahrd to find, and fairly dear when you do. You could slice a B21 bellhousing apart and weld it back together with the engine slant taken out. Or just wait for an M40/41 to come along.

See Bill Garland's database (new address)
http://www.nuceng.ca/bill/volvo/database/tranny.htm

Doesn't mention 160's coming with M45. M45 was in 240s except the '75 model.

Don't know how correct the info is.

Interesting, I'm at work but at home I've got a link to a list of transmissions used which states the 164 had an M45 as well as something else. I would not trust that info 100% either. Will post the link next time I remember which might be only next week (last long weekend for a while in New Zealand, and it is Summer here...).

Anyway, I've missed the auction which included 2 B20 engines (one rebuilt 3000 km ago and then developed top end noise), the transmission, full engine gasket set, and other spares. Was for NZ$250, or about US$175, for everything. I was thinking too long about what would my wife say...

For $175, I'd have taken the risk! Haha, oh well. (nmi) 140-160 1973

HI!

IT should fit, speedometers gear ratio, can be different, depends of rear end gears. Drivesaft "cross" chances -74 ( 50.8mm axle dia) But I remember, that there is no different fittings to the gearbox. Clutch release bearing are different in SACHS and AP/ Borg Beck. I have last fitted M-400 to early 240, and there was no problems, that I can remember. Sorry, that I have not here, the " oldies" Green book.

The 164 won't have an M45, it'll have an M400 or M410. Either way, it won't fit without some serious massaging...

An account of the serious massaging involved can be found here:

True. I completely missed the part where he mentioned it was from a "164" anyway.
