Anyone going to Carlisle Import Kit/Replicar Nationals in May? We are - first time! I understand that Volvo is the featured car this year. Should be fun!

My father and I will be there. We already have motel and showfield reservations. It will be our first time at the import show. We have been to the Ford show and it was very well done. The 544 will not be ready so the 240 wagon will be there.

I should also be there, representing with the truck (for buying goodies) and the '67 custom 1800S trailer for hauling it all home. It's only an hour from the house.

I have a vendor space there every year, and I've brought cars for the showfield the past 3 years. Last two I had my '73 142E race car, and before that I displayed my restored and mildly customized '71 142E road car. I'm going to try like hell to have my dad's '59 PV544 vintage race car done at least cosmetically by then. It's a genuine old racer, and it competed in the Sebring 12hour endurance race in '69, as well as the SCCA nation championship event at Daytona in '69. Since Volvo is the featured car this year, I decided it's time to put this project on the front burner and turn the heat up. :) Suspension is just about ready to be reassembled, and I got the replacement rocker panels in the mail yesterday, so I can get moving on the shell.

Wow!!!! I don't believe this. I was at the 12 hours of Sebring in 1969 and I remember seeing the the old PV in the race. Your not going to believe this but I was taking movies with my trusty Fujica P1 single eight camera and I have some footage of your dad's car in action. I actually have some footage of a pit stop which consisted of one or two people at the most just refueling the car, cleaning the windshield, and giving the driver a drink of water. What a hoot compared to the factory teams. I didn't own a Volvo yet but I belive I was driving my mothers '66 122 at the time. If I remember correctly I think he completed the whole 12 hours of the race.
Now to the bad part. About 15 or 20 years ago I transferred the movie to the VHS format via the telecine methed. I seem to have misplaced the tape and can't find it. If I do manage to find it I was going to transfer it to DVD format. Let me know if you want a copy. If I can find the tape that is.

      Cheers. Jim Robinson

That's incredible!!! My dad said he'd give anything to have a copy of that footage if you can dig it up. I'd love to see it as well, to date, we've come across a total of 4 seconds worth of video from back then of the car. Your memory is correct, they did finish the race, albeit in last place (of the cars that finished...) Thanks in part to a radiator borrowed out of an enthusiastic spectators brand new 140 Volvo, due to the radiator fan disintigrating. When I put the car back together, I'm leaving the hole it punched thru the inner fender. You're also correct on the crew situation. It consisted of two people, and which ever driver wasn't currently in the drivers seat. A credit to volvo's engineers: The car ran the Sebring 12hr on the engine that had been run all season in '68 in the northeast, with only a change of oil, then after the 12hr, they changed the head gasket and oil, and ran the rest of the '69 season, and then the SCCA Runoffs at Daytona at the end of the season! Only in a Volvo. Great to hear from you!

        -Nick

          Sebring 1969 444-544

Hot damn I found the tape. Well Nick you will be glad to hear that I found the tape and I was able to copy about 19 minutes for you. It consists of Sebring 1969 and the Runoffs at Daytona in '69. There is no footage of the 544 in the Daytona portion but I thought you might want to see it anyway just to jog some memories. Of that 19 minutes you might have 30 to 60 seconds of footage with the 544. The quality of the dvd is equal to the VHS tape. However the original film was much better. Having said that at least it is better than nothing at all. I was mistaken about the pit footage, I only got the PV leaving the pits not the actual pit stop. You will catch a glimpse of a white 66 122 and that was, and still is, my mothers 122. The only thing you need to do now is email your address and I will send you the DVD.

    Tony,

Our 444 will not be together by then but we plan to attend. If we do go, it will be the first time for us. Hope to see you there.
