Water Pump (B200E) 200 1989

Hi All, from a 'first timer'!

Recently lost all coolant on a very short trip of about a mile. Managed to get the car home. Fault was with the radiator - well past its 'use by'! Anyway I have replaced the rad, along with hoses & the thermostat.
After firing up all seemed well until the car was properly warmed up and it developed a knocking noise. This appears to come from directly behind the centre of the radiator. Could this be the water pump? I was advised that the thermostat could be the culprit, but have confirmed that it is not by removing it and running the engine.
I think I should be able to replace the pump (bit of a novice)but would like to be able to confirm the problem first. Seems odd that there is no knocking when cold.
Anyway, difficult to diagnose over the web I know, but all advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.

You could get it warmed up then quickly whip the fan belts off. If it stopped, you would know it was the water pump (or alternator). If it persisted, I'd suspect some damage in the engine. Did it seriously overheat?

      Thanks for that will do.
no it did'nt get seriously hot as I was only about 1/2 a mile from home when the guage started to rise. By the time I switched off it had'nt got into the red.
      Cheers.

        Right.

Have taken off the belts, first letting it warm up to start it 'knocking'.With just the power steering belt off it still knocked.
With the two water pump belts off the knocking stopped. Bingo!

Have just ordered a new pump & belts from Tony Barret.

Just hope I can get it all back together!

        Thanks.

The water pump at first glance is a straight forward job. The problem is that it doesn't always go as planned. There is a tendancy for the bolts holding the pump on to corrode and then when turned snap off in the block. I had two do that on my water pump job. One came out easily and one took a couple days of very frustrating work to get out. My heater return tube also haqd to be replaced but you should not have a problem with that. The pump has two holes on the 3 o'clock position that are elongated. You use these holes to loosely start the first two bolts. With that in place and the top gasket in position under its seat you use a crow bar to press the pump upwards so the top rubber gasket presses against its seat. Then put in and tighten a bolt on the 9 o'clock side. If your engine face is clean and not pitted at all you should be able to use just the replacement gasket. If there is any doubt use a bead of RTV sealant. My engine face looked OK but it leaked like a sieve. I ended up using RTV and it has been fine. I don't want to scare you off doing your pump but mine turned into an ordeal. The hardest part was getting the broken bolt out of the block. I hear it goes better with some applied heat.

            Hi All.

Many thanks for the helpful advice. Yes I have managed to replace the pump. A mate (also a novice) came to help. Took us most of the day. Nothing was seized so all came apart okay. Just used a little grease to stick the new gasket to the block. No leaks yet.

As for the knocking........ that continued only this time from cold. After a lot of looking we took the top half of the timing belt cover off & ran the engine to find it a quiet as it shouls be. With the cover back on it knocked again.

The fault was that one of the metal collars the the covers bolt pass through has rusted away. The bolt was not holding the cover so it had moved back a smidge and was being knocked by the water pump pulley. I have, as a temp' measure simply cut away a piece of the cover about the size of my little finger nail and all is quiet.

Before you ask, yes the old pump was well worn so it was worth changing it!

            Thanks.

Glad it went so well. My pump was so corroded that one place on the pump wall was egg shell thin. I was able to push a screw driver through it with no effort.
