Trans model confusion... M400 in a 122 wagon?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my B20B for my 67 122S wagon. Engine is going fine but tonight I spent some time on the trans, The trans is leaking so I bought a gasket kit for a M40 trans. The brass tag on the bottom of the trans say that it is a M400 254648 301267. It has a J-type OD attached. The front shaft was reduced and has larger U-joints & flange than the rear. It has a solid rubber bearing support, without the spring.

The filler and drain are located on the passenger side and appear to be the same as the M41. The fill is higher that the M40 by about 1.5"- 2". It is attached to a bell housing from the rear of the housing with hex bolts (4). The top is set up with the OD switch and a separate switch for the rear back-up lights.

What is it? My quick research says that it is out of a 164? If I'm going to rebuild or clean it up it would be helpful to know from where it came? I thought it was a M40, than I thought because of the filler and drain hole locations and offset, I thought it was a M41. The brass tag says M400. Now that I have it out, OD off and opened up, I'm not sure what it is..... It was working just fine but leaked between the gear box and OD sections.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Bill, LaGrange, Illinois.

Trans model confusion... M400 in a 122 wagon?

You say, "It is attached to a bell housing from the rear of the housing with hex bolts (4)."
That is subject to a couple different interpretations.
The M40/M41 tranny has allen bolts going through ears on the front of the
tranny on both sides into threaded holes in the aluminum bellhousing, so the
    boltheads are OUTSIDE the bellhousing.
The M400/M410 tranny uses the bellhousing as the tranny front cover and the
bolts go from INSIDE the bellhousing into the tranny case. Bellhousings
small enough to fit a B20 block and still fit the M400/M410 are about as
common as hen's teeth, i.e. EXTREMELY rare, so much so that some have paid
hundreds of dollars to have them fabricated.

The above should help you figure out which you've got.
Personally although the M400/M410 are stronger trannies the have lube/wear
issues in some of the bearings, so unless you have absolutely brutish power,
I would guess you would be better off with the more common M41. The overdrives
    are identical.

Trans model confusion... M400 in a 122 wagon?

      George,

I have 4 allen bolts that attach to the threaded rear of the bell housing. The gear box has 4-dog ears that the allen bolts pass through to thread into the bell house. All physical indications tell me that this is a M41.... What is confusing is that the brass plate says that the model is a M400. The plate is not screwed into the trans but is riveted so I think it's original.

The question is... Would a M41 state M41 on the brass plate or is the 400-SERIES model inclusive of the M41? The fill is in the right place to indicate that it is a M41. I'm getting ready to order parts and I just want to be clear.

      Thanks again!

      Bill

        Trans model confusion... M400 in a 122 wagon? 120-130

If the bolts go from the OUTSIDE of the bellhousing through the tranny ears
and into threaded holes in the aluminum bellhousing it is NOT an M400 or M410.
Maybe somebody swapped brass plates because they are indeed different trannies.
It has got to be an M41. BTW the M400 plate is usually on the bottom of the
bellhousing, which is part of the M400 tranny, not a separate item.

          Thanks!

Just checked the brass plate again... bottom of the gear box located at the rear end of the box. (M400 254648 301267) Measures 24" from the front face of the box to the back face of the flange on the J-OD Unit. (+/- 1/16th")

Looks like a M41, sounds like a M41... Brass tag had me confused....

          Thanks again, Bill
