Update: Sputters & Dies 200

The car died at one of the busiest intersections in Sacramento on my way to work =(

I had it towed to the office and ran over to a nearby auto (volvo) dismantler who gouged me for a used Crank position sensor ($45!!). I pulled the old one; here it is:

I guess I found the reason that it would occasionally die.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

    Update: Sputters & Dies 200

Glad you found the solution! These sensors are one of only a few "Achilles' heels" in these cars.

Check your used replacement for a white band on the wire. If it has a yellow one, you might be set up for the same problems again.

Hopefully others on the board will see your picture and *replace their original crankshaft position sensors*! They're *all* toast in 2007. No exceptions. None. Volvo released a TSB ten years ago on these things and there's an updated sensor available. Original ones have a yellow band (or the remnants thereof) on them. I thought the one in our '91 740 was as scary as they could get.... till I pulled the one in my 240! Yow. If you have an '89-'93 240 (or late 740/940), check on the condition of this part!

They tend to run $30 from FCP Groton and are easy to replace depending on your body's geometry. (if you're in SE Ohio, I'll gladly loan out my long skinny arms and 30 minutes of my time to you)
