drum brake parts 120-130

I'm sure this has been discussed, but,... Well, here goes; I'm doing the "full Monty" on a '64 122 wagon (floorboard, suspension, engine, brakes, etc.)

Of course, despite diagrams, photos and notes, I have managed to get into trouble on the rear drum brakes, specifically the LEFT rear one. It concerns the "spreader bar" which activates the hand brake; these are the Girling type brakes with the
steel,/aluminum 4 sided adjuster, on the outside of the backing plate.
Big question? Are there TWO different bars, or is there one which points in the opposite direction on either side. The little "tang" or curved metal part of the bar points down on the RIGHT, but UP on the LEFT. Did I blow it and lose the correct LEFT one, or am I having a senior moment? The problem is that the way it's currently mounted, the shoes are too far apart to let the drum slide on easily.
Thanks for all of your patience!

    Revolvo,

I vaguely recall these bars are identical. As I recall there is only one way they could be installed - which means that when installed, one of the bent tangs on the spacer bar will point up and the other tang (on the opposite drum) will point down. This is what you found as well.

Warning! all of the above is a rather fuzzy recollection (I have senior moments as well), but I am certain that I scratched my head over these bars and the bent tang. Why they were designed this way I have no idea. In addition, my blue parts maunal with the exploded views shows this bar, but does not show this bent part so I thought I had some wierd variant.

I had to exert some pressure to get the drums back on as the shoes were just a bit too far apart - but the drum did go back on and everything works. It is possible that when you cleaned up the adjuster (and I hope you did because they get pretty crudded up) that they are now adjusted so that the shoes (are they new?) are too far out. Or possibly the emergency brake cable is adjusted too tight (look under the car and follow the cable from each drum until the point where it joins the cable coming from the emergency brake handle mechanism). There is nut where the cables join and you can adjust the e-brake tension. Or if you are using the original springs they may not exert enough tension - new springs make a difference.

    waggin.
