Temperature Comp Board Post-Operative Summary: I made my own IPD unit 200 1993

My son got home and I tore into the 240 dash. Got the cluster apart and yanked out the detestable TCB. Before I started to wire solder 1 to 3, I looked at the instructions and the tiny unit junction bypass they sell I printed from IPD and got an idea that worked perfectly. I am not an expert soldersmith, so working in the tight confines on soldering those 2 pins prompted me to try this. It DOES require the destruction of the TCB though (which felt gooooddd). . .

1. I took the TCB, and with a pair of needle nose pliers, broke out the tiny sleeves by breaking the board right up next to the connectors that slid over the pins, there were 4 of them obviously, so I only needed 2 of them. I was being careful NOT to break the tiny tips that went through the circuit board that were soldered to the other side.

2. Once I got them out I gently bent the top side wire that went throught the circuit board straight up to provide a prong to solder. The other open end of the connector will be used to slide back over the prongs #1 and #3 like they did when they were attached to the board prongs.

3. I then soldered my connector wire to the top of the 2 connectors using the newly bent up prong as a solder point.

4. I gently slid the connectors over #1 and #3.

I installed it back in and it worked like a charm. I know this may seem like a waste of time instead of directly soldering it to the connectors, but I was afraid I might drop some solder on something I should not and fry something. Basically I made my own IPD slide on connector.

Hope this helps, and thanks for all the advice. This place is absolutely invaluable. If you have not contributed to keep it going, you should!

I suppose it might be fun to go thru this soldering exercise...
    However, there's really no need:
Get a 2-1/2 inch piece of lamp cord with ends cut off.
Poke a thin nail up each end to make a hollow space inside the wire.
Push the ends over the pins #1 and #3.
I've done at least three without a hitch.

      Another DIY non-soldering job! 200 1993

Glad this method is in use!

      Yup. I've done four now.
      Works very nicely.
I always recommend 16-ga. wire; it's thick enough to work without hassle.

CoolVolvo, did you use thinner without problems?

Exellent idea, could have saved me some time 200 1993

but I still got to practice my soldering and nuking that dess-pickable board. . .

Congratulations! You have graduated to the point where you have removed the "Volvo Blinders"! Please note though that the main failure of the TCB was and still is oxidation between the pins on the cluster board and the TCB. My first experience with this was on an 89 with 3000 miles.

Your approach will probably work fine, at least for a few years, but if it hiccups again, solder a wire between the pins... the oxidation issue goes away.

    Welcome to the club!
