Reverse threaded? 120-130

Is the DS of the center rod and end reverse threaded?

    Reverse threaded? 120-130

    The threads are opposite, like a turnbuckle, so you can turn the center and
    rapidly adjust it wider and narrower. That is, one end is RH thread and the
    other end is LH thread. They are the same size and pitch.

    yep. In this way, when both locknuts are loosened, rotating the center rod adjusts both wheels in or out the same amount at the same time.
    This may be why you're having such a hard time breaking the locknut free(?)

      Seeing as I spent some time tightening it, then it makes sense that I couldn't loosen it!

        Hello Pearl:

        When you reattach the rod ensure you do not swap the ends. No big deal if you do, but you want to arrange it so that turning the rod in the direction the wheels rotate will thread out the ends, increasing toe. Turning the rod in the reverse direction of wheel rotation will decrease toe. You will need to adjust your toe after making your swap so check this thread for some handy tips from George and others:
