If 1st cold start of day is for 1 minute, then won't start 200 1988

This seems to be very specific, it only happens when it's cold outside, e.g., winter. When the car is moved from the driveway and parked on the street for the first start of the day, it then won't start due to fouled plugs EXCEPT if I pull the fuel pump relay under the glove box, then crank until it starts to fire (I assume I'm burning up excess fuel), then put back the relay, then it starts. Once it's warmed up and driven the rest of the day I have no problem. Also no problem during warm weather. Since I have 2 other 240's, I can try swapping out parts. Suggestions?

I don;t think the fuel pump relay itself has anything to do with it. If the car is fouling the plugs only in this situaition, then it has to do with the amopunt of fuel being injected.

Obviously, ask yourself if you are burning more fuel than you should normally.

1988 is too early for codes, BUT two things you want to check would be the AMM< and the o2 sensor. 1988 has a heated element function that needs to wrok correctly, and if it doesn't, it can cause some strange things to happen at the 1 minute mark, until the ECU throws it out of the mark. Proper functions can be checked with a digital meter.

Alas, I smell an AMM problem, but as it is still 007, you should be able to find a good used one cheaply.

Sub a good one in, and test it out.

The O2 sensor has been replaced. "Heated element function". Is this within the AMM? I'll try swapping the AMM, I think my '86 is also 007.

The 02 sensor has the heated element, thus the three wires. Older units had only the one wire.

The AMM on the 1986, 87, 88 are the 007 units. They, too, use a heated wire system. Swap in the AMM from your '86 and se how that does. Easy test, yes?

When the engine starts, the computer is in "Open Loop" mode, it doesn't expect all the measurements to be correct. After a certain time or temp is reached, it goes into "Closed Loop".

During open loop it runs a little rich, then it will balance it out. You can hear it after a start, the engine smoothes out even though your gas pedal is unchanged.

If there is an air leak after the AMM the mixture will be lean (too little fuel) and the 02 sensor will pick it up. Things get out of balance.

Check for holes in the bottom side of the accordion air hose from the AMM to the throttle body. Holes are hard to find. I checked mine, it was OK. Later I took the hose off the car, found several holes. Replacement is not expensive.
Black vinyl electrical tape will do for a temporary patch.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

Good advice, I'll check it out and let you know what I find. Thanks.

I don't have any experience with this kind of problem but why not try swapping out that fuel pump relay with a different one and see what happens? It can't hurt and I'm guessing since it's under the glovebox it shouldn't be too difficult to R&R. Good Luck!
