Code P0116 S90-V90

Happy Holidays,

I have a 98 S90 and I ran an OBD II scanner yesterday on my "check engine" light. The code came out as P0116. It has something to do with the cooler circuit. Does anyone know how to remedy this code? I have a smog check coming up and I want to make sure I get this fixed before I bring it in. Any information will be very helpful.

Thank you much.

Generic OBDII code P0116 indicated a malfuntioning Engine Coolant Sensor circuit. Bad sensor or wiring.

I had this same problem last summer and it kept coming back more frequently. I monitored this sensor and found that there was a sudden drop in temp. followed by a sharp recovery. Turned out to be that the coolant temp. sensor had a connector right at the sensor, I sprayed Wd40 inside the connector on both the wire and temp. sensor side and reset the code and it never happened again.

        Hello William -

I have a 1997 965 with the CEL lit, and this caught my eye: ...reset the code.... Can the code be reset without using a reader?

The problem is on-going, the AutoZone reading says it's in the evaporative emissions system. Paid the dealer $250 to fix, and the light + code returned in under 10 days. (Got the emissions test passed just in time!)

        Thanks you,

        Bob

Gosh I hadn't rechecked this thread. I have a software on my PDA to do it, but as I understand it, I have heard of people disconnecting the battery for a while to get rid of the cel. However You will need the radio code if you do something like that. I had to get my radio code from the dealer. They need you to go in and give them your VIN to get it.

        Hello William,

I just had the same code come up - lambda light was on and scanned the OBD II code P0116.(1998 S70) Also i noticed last night after driving for 2 hours the engine fan was running high even though it was very cold out.

Where is the connector you lubricated? Is it under or on the top of car, do you have a photo or link to a diagram?

Thanks in advance for any help!

The sensor is located immediately under the Thermostat housing. The Thermostat housing it attached to the top radiator hose where it goes into the engine.

The wire coming from it is about 5 inches long max. and then it connects to a longer wire. Where the two wires connect is where I gently pulled them apart and lubricated them. WD40 is good for that sort of thing.

On my wifes 98 V70XC the check engine light was diagnosed as code 116, the coolant temperature sensor. So,I run out to Autozone and picked one up. I looked in the manual and find it's location under the thermostat housing but the connector plug is diffent than the one I bought. So back to Autozone and after a half hour it was determined I had the correct part. There is a temperature sensor switch that controls the temp guage and a sensor that communicates with the computer, ie. two different parts. THe sensor is Wells part no. SU5282 and has two flat or L-shaped spade connectors and the switch two round pin type connectors. My problem is that I can't find the location of the sensor. The sensor switch is located near the thermostat but where is that dang sensor located? It appears there is an error in the Chilton's manual and the computer database at Autozone. The manual and Autozone computer both show the location of both the sensor and the switch near the thermostat which is actually the sensor switch, not the sensor. Does anyone know where I can find the location of the sensor? I've looked all over with no luck. THanks for taking the time.

The sensor is located under the thermostat housing-you will need to remove the hose going to the therm housing and remove the therm housing and then you will see the sensor located under all mentioned above-should go ahead and replace the thermostat at the same time since you have her down that far.
