240 Classic grille 200

Bad luck of bad luck. An impact with a partridge smashed the grille on the 93 240 Classic. Finding a replacement grille will probably be about impossible, as I want to stay with the green colored version as found on only the classic model. Anyone know if buying a black one, then having it painted green to match the original is a realistic solution? If not, any other suggestions are very much appreciated.

Daryl

    Daryl,

There's a guy that is slowly auctioning off parts from a dead classic:

    rempoonuts

You might try to contact him to see if he's got a decent grill. I think the classic he was salvaging was blue-green. You can track him down by searching e-bay.

    Good luck,

    Thanks for the suggestions 200

Thanks gentlemen, for the good suggestions. Kinda looks like I'll probably be getting a chrome version and painting it. I've checked lots of salvage yards, but haven't been able to locate a direct "Classic" replacement in blue/green. Unless another forum member has one of these in their parts bin...? Daryl

Chrome grille surrounds are pretty easy to paint, but you need to be precise in your technique.

First, you'll have to remove the surround from the center--if memory serves me correctly, you do this by punching the centers out of the plastic connectors. I can't remember if the fasteners are reusable after that--may have to replace with small bolts.

The chrome is actually covered by some kind of clear acrylic coating for durability, so you'll actually be painting that.

You'll need to rough up the acrylic with sandpaper first. I think I used 400 grit. Don't get too aggressive, you don't have to remove the acrylic, just
take the gloss off. The surface should still feel smooth to the finger when you are done.

Then just apply spray paint, airbrush etc. I did mine about four years and 30,000 miles ago, and it still looks good. The paint has flaked in a very minor way in a few spots, but overall it's holding up well.

      HTH,

      DS

Try Volvo/Saab Auto Dismantler in Sacramento, CA (they ship). They have lots of parts and may have the correct grill for your car. Worth a phone call anyways.

    Hi,
You'll have to paint the vertical slats too as the Classics were silver with the body color surround. My Classic had its grille damaged too and I plan to paint a used one to match. Any body shop should be able to do it.

I'd just go ahead and find ANY later 240 grill and paint it. Most Volvo dealers and shops can order the OEM paint, or IPD can get it. If the grill surround is chrome, sand it down, prime, then paint. No big deal.

A body shop should know how to get paint to stick to a plastic object like a black grille surround. Probably a special primer.

You might also ask at the dealer and see if they have a special grille surround for the classic, but they probably either don't or it is shockingly expensive.
