How Can You Tell if Your AMM is Fried? 200

I understand that if your hot/cold air intake thermostat is stuck closed so that only hot air enters the intake, that it can fry your Air Mass Meter.

Can you visually determine that the AMM is ruined from this problem? Is there something you can see by looking at it? Or does it just stop working and you won't know unless you replace it?

Thanks Again,
Jon Zaremba

No you can not see a bad AMM unless the sensor wire is broken. Other than that you have to have it tested. With the engine OFF unplug the AMM and see if it runs better. If so then guess what? Yep. But not always.. Ahhh,, A catch.. What year is your Brick? There are some problems that are year specificate.

How Can You Tell if Your AMM is Fried? 200

I just went through this last summer. The thermo in the air filter box stuck and burned up my AMM. I get in the car to go somewhere and the car started only to die. I tried repeatedly to start it but it refused to idle.

Disconnect the cable going into the AMM and it started and ran on some temp routine in the computer.

Hi Jon,

The AMM on my '87 740 wagon was bad when I got it. The car wouldn't rev up and would bog down under acceleration. I also had an AMM go out on my 240 and it wouldn't idle well and lost a good bit of power.

Good luck with it.
Dave

Thanks for the replies. By looking at your AMM, were you able to tel that is was dead just by looking? Is there a visual characteristic?

I'm trying to fix an idle poblem and i don't want to buy one if i don't need to.

Thanks Again,
Jon Zaremba

Give us your problem and we will try to help. You cannot "see" a bad AMM. You can however disconnect it and see if it will run.

thanks for all of the replies. this really is a great forum...

Archie, i don't want to go into my problem with you guys until i've done everything i know how to do first. that's not much really, so i'll probably be asking for help again next week.

Until then, i'm bidding on an AMM on Ebay and replacing the air intake hose.

Thanks Again,
Jon Zaremba

IMHO, the AMM was the beginning of the end of the owner fixable Volvo....the end of the line is the S80, for now...more to come. If you can't look at it and see if it's broke you can't fix it without an alchemist..............so it goes...unschooled peasants.

Not neccessarily... even the last generation of FI systems in the 240 are very user serviceable. In a sense, they're even more user friendly with OBD and the simplicity of the system... seeing how total knobs like myself can even diagnose and service LH-jet problems. Plus, the systems are so simple and robust, problems really don't arise all that oftem.

It's true that there are several "black boxes" like the AMM and power stage, but used spares can be had cheap and used to diagnose problems in a pinch. :)
