89 AC bypass 200

I would like to bypass the AC on my 89. It's never worked since I have owned it and I think it's starting to make a lot of noise. Is it as simple as buying a V-belt for the same year and model that doesn't have AC ? looks like a 10x938

The PS pump doesn't have to be moved. Just measure the distance between the crank, water pump and PS pump with a piece of string and ask the parts counter for the closest V belt within half an inch. I don't remember the exact measurement. You will have to trim off a small corner from the timing belt cover. This is what the final product looks like.

The Power Steering pump has to move forward abou .75".
Making an adapter bracket isn't that easy. I looked into designing my own.
I never use my AC so I was thinking of taking it out of teh loop too.

The timing belt cover gets in the way if you try to run a belt directly to the PS pump from the center pulley. If you had an earlier year, IDP sells a kit to move the PS pulley forward to the same plane as the AC belt. Since you don't have the earlier year, the kit does you no good. Some have modified their timing belt cover to accomodate the belt. I decided to try another route.

I bought an old PS pump and mounting bracket from an earlier car that came without AC. Unfortunately, the bracket doesn't bolt directly onto my '92 engine. When I get around to this project, some modifications to the bracket will be necessary.

There are a lot of us that want to do what you're proposing, but no easy, bolt-on solution.

Well crikey. Maybe IPD could be persuaded to make a kit for later models? I'll call and ask. Thanks
      for replies

The kit they do sell (http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=516&NodeID=567&RootID=629) only works on 1978-84 240's because the P/S pump on those years has a bolt-on pulley. The kit is basically a spacer to move the pulley forward so that a belt can be run directly to the center drive pulley without modifying the timing belt cover.

On later models, the P/S pulley is not bolt-on, so a spacer option is not possible there. I think the only way IPD could do this short of providing a replacement P/S pump (expensive?) would be to provide spacers where the pump bolts onto the bracket. I have seen home-made versions of this posted in this forum. See:
