Depends on how serious you want to get. Don't get tempted to overtune, you want an engine that will run on the worst fuel you'll come across.

What are the rules? Weaknesses on the standard cars when run over rough ground are the frame breaking where it joins the bulkhead, wishbones breaking, halfshafts break because the woodruff keyway is a stress raiser on the morsetaper. The uprated ones that were availavble from Holland are little better than the originals.

122s are widely used in vintage rallying in Europe, so there should be info available on that, though for Baja you may well need to go further in terms of reinforcement of suspension/roll cage etc.

If I recall correctly there was a Saab 96, circa 1972, sponsored by Sears tires and batteries that did very well in the 1000. You might search out a write-up on that too, as the basic car is comparable to a 122 in structural strength and ruggedness.

That Saab 96 was largely stock. The 122 should be able to do it stock too, if it is in sound condition. Bring lots of spare stuff, strip everything from the car you won't need.

As far as outfitting it: Oil cooler & ancillary strainer/magnet. A VPD enlarged and baffled sump would be nice. Coolant recovery & a manually controlled electric fan. If you could rig a duct & fan to the heater core, that could enlarge and enhance your cooling capacity, but it probably isn't neccessary. Tall tires.

In the early '70s, Bill Carpenter and Jerry McMurrey competing in this took the drivetrain and hypopneumatic suspension from a Citoren DS and built a tube frame around it, re-routed the cooling system to behind and slightly above the driver's seat. The drivetrain was un-altered. Front wheel drive w/ hydraulic steering and brakes, all four wheels always on the ground; even if you lost a whole rim it wouldn't have slowed the car down.

It would be fun to just run it as-is though. No matter what you buld, it'll never come close to the custom trophy trucks.

Steel timing gears, maybe a skid plate and plenty of spare tires.
