85 VOLVO 740 DIESEL???????? 700 1985

ANYONE HAVE A BOOK ABOUT THESE ENGINES MOST REPAIR BOOK HARDLY MENTION THEY WERE IN THESE CARS FOR 3 YRS.....HAVE ONE THAT OVERHEATED AND NOW WILL NOT START....CRANKS BUT NO START....NO WATER ON DIPSTICK OR OIL CAP.....ANY ADVICE?

No starting after overheating is most likely blown head gasket. Diesel engines are not nearly as forgiving as gasoline engines to low compression and cannot start with leakage.

Whoever does the repair job MUST understand the correct procedure and have certain special tools. Improper repair with the belt disconnected, or not properly tightening the crankshaft pulley bolt if timing belt is changed during this repair, will result in numerous bent valves.

Cylinder condition can be assessed once the head is off as the overheating may have been severe enough to cause piston or cylinder damage.

Diesels do not bend valves, they punch the valve straight through the camshaft and break the camshaft into 6 little paper weights. Unfortunately I have seen it too many times.

You are absolutely right. I forgot about the broken cams. I was in 960 land when I wrote that. The bottom line is the same (or worse).... valve position not follow crank timing correctly = very bad.
