Yes. I use 10 - 40 weight year round. I am in central NJ.

In most North American climates you could run a good 5W-30 year round. Here in Northern California I used 10W-30 year round, or sometimes 15W-40 in the summer if we are going to be doing some long runs through the central valley.
There are some 5W-40 European Formula synthetic oils sold which meet various BMW and VW special specifications which would also be an excellent year round choice.
An oil with a strong cult following is the Made in Germany version of Castrol Syntec 0W-30, generally sold in Autozones. An excellent year round Volvo 240 choice.

I use Dino oil 19-40 all year around. Castrol GTX in all my cars and motorcycles.
Here in lower New York the Temps do not usually get below 10 degrees F or much above 100 degrees F. The 10-40 does fine within that Temperature range

With modern oils, they certainly have that capability.
Not to mention that I use a synthetic: AmsOil 10W-40
Great film strenght protection at high temperatures, and great low temperature flow point. What more can you ask for in a multi-season capable lubricant?

Castrol 15W40 or Shell Rotella 15W40 in summer (Texas, VERY HOT, 40+ days of 100+ heat and no rain this year!) every 3500 + genuine Volvo oil filter $4.50ea/case of 12 from mail order Volvo dealer (almost out, probably $5.25ea now.)
Something from the seven sisters used as a loss leader at PepBoys during the winter @ 10W30 weight. Lately, a Valvoline oil that retails for $3.79/qt on sale with a $17.49 rebate on 5 quarts = FREE! (cost of sales tax and .39 stamp not included) or something else hopefully about .25 cents/qt after rebate, usually Exxon, Mobil, Texaco or Castrol.
Really, does it make a difference which brand?? If I had a digital camera, I'd take a picture of my engine with the valve cover taken off. Most Volvo engines, on the inside, look like someone spit tobacco juice on them. My enging looks like the inside of an aluminum soda can, nice and clean for an engine with 250K
Mine is a testimony to the virtues of changing the oil every 3500 miles.

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 245K looking forward to 300K badge. >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

10-30 all year in Connecticut. Winters here go down to about 5-10 blow zero, summers to about 100 deg. F. Those are the extremes - mostly temps are between 5-95 deg. F.
15-40 if the car leaks oil - it leaks more slowly that way. OK for cold winter weather, in my experience. '86 245 (r.ip.) went to about 400K miles on straight 15-40.
I've been using WalMart synthetic in the 10-30 cars. Costs about the same as the less expensve branded dino oils, and I figure it's likely better than branded dino. I'm personally not willing to pay about $5/quart for branded synthetic.

Mobil 1 5W-30 in Iowa all year long in both turbos and non-turbos. 7500 miles between changes.

10w-30 all the time. Castrol dino in the normally aspirated cars and synthetic in the turbos.

I use Cstrol 10W40 all year round in my 245 newspaper delivery car. I run 90 miles a day 5 days a week. Running papers is about the roughest mileage you'll put on a car and the engine has never had a problem.
