AC belt change help 200

I just got a free 1990 240DL. I'm having a bit of trouble replacing a broken AC belt. what do i need to loosen to get the compressor to pivot so i can get the new belt on. loving the car so far but driving with non fuctional power steering is getting to be a bit of a chore.

    AC belt change help 200

Of all the things I have done to my car over the last 16 years, dealing with the A/C compressor & belt replacement has to be the one thing that I enjoy the LEAST. No matter how you approach it, it is always a pain!

    hello matt,

congrats on your new 1990. nice to get a 240 for free. now, don't expect to get off cheap yet. put money in a bentley 240 repair manual. check the FAQ 7xx/9xx in bb.

get all of your tools and replacement parts that you need (read first, below). you might want to replace your p/s belt at the same time.

by the way, many people replace all their belts when they replace their timing belt and or water pump.

i buy many of my new volvo parts from fcpgroton.com, and the conti belts are supposed to be oem. i've got conti belts. pretty cheap and exc quality.

now, removing the a/c belt is tricky because the a/c needs to be loosened and pivoted all the while keeping it aligned.

    a. there are 4 nuts and one bolt you will need to loosen and i bet you only see 4. the bolt is a 10 mm long bolt to tighten or loosen the compr belt. i'll tell you the 4 nuts below.

    b. that 10 mm bolt, don't try to move it until you have all other 4 bolts loosened because if you don't, that long bolt not move anything andwill twist in half.

    c. one tricky part is making sure the compr is aligned with the belt.

    d) this is my way of doing it, and from memory--it may not be the easiest or best way.
    ---------------------------------
    1) first 2 nuts. you will need to get under the car & remove the plastic belly pan if you still have one, and loosen the 2 bolts that attaches the a/c compressor to the accessory frame. the bolts are 13 mm and the nuts are 12 mm, or the other way around.

    2) the 3rd nut. i think it's a 12 or 13 mm nut that holds the long screw assy and loosen that. it's located right above the pulley center. you can take the nut off but be sure to catch the bolt that might fall back behind.

move that long arm assy--it should easily move, but it might not--it might be screwed down, i can't remember.

    3) 4th bolt. you will need a 13 mm socket, a u-joint, rachet (preferably 1/2 in drive), and long connections. the 4th nut is on a long sliding bar like the 3rd nut but underneath the rear of the compr. the bolt is a round pan head with no slots for a screw driver so, you wouldn't know it if you didn't know what that was.

NOTE: be sure NOT to take the nut off of the panhead bolt. you can get it back on, but as a beginner it will take a while to find a way to put it back on.

    4) you have all the nuts loosened, now the 10 mm long bolt, loosen that until there is a lot of free play.

    5) the compressor is now ready to loosen, push on it toward the engine--you might need a crowbar.

    6) slide the belt off.

    7) put the new one back on.

    8) now tighten up the 4 bolts just enough where the compr doesn't have any slack to be moved forward and backwards--here you are trying to keep the compr aligned.

    9) you will need to get underneath the car with a crowbar, and force the compr out away from the engine, and tighten the nuts & bolts under neath (those first 2 bolts).

    10) put that sliding bar right above the pulley in the compr hole along with the 3rd nut and panhead bolt, and again for the 4th nut. now just tighten nuts 3 & 4 enough to hold the compr from sliding back toward the engine.

    11) tighten the 10 mm long bolt to tighten the belt, but make sure the compr is not getting out of alignment, if it is then you have too much play in the 3rd & 4th nuts and their bolts.

    12) after tightening the 10 mm bolt to where the belt is tight enough, don't tighten the 10 mm bolt again. torque to specs all 4 nuts and their bolts.

it sounds easier than doing it the first time.

sorry i don't have pics, i said one time i would have pics. i may have left out a few steps, but you're getting the idea. others can share their experiences and fill in info.

write back if you get stuck. count on hours for the first time.

    regards,

Thanks for the reply. I already have a bentley. I've had quite a few watercooled VW's so i'm fimilar with the benefits of the bentley manual. I have most of what you mentioned loose just not the 13mm in the rear. with this info i shouldn't have to much trouble. thanks
