Tailgate gaskets 140-160 1970

I'm experiencing bad leaks around the hatch and glass on my 145.

Would anyone know if the gasket for the tailgate and window on a 245 is the same as a '70 145? The tailgates look similar, but I don't know.

I think the last few years of the 245 had what looks like a larger rear glass so those probably would not fit. Perhaps the hatch gasket is the same though.

Help?

As far as I know, all tailgates with the original style back window (68 to circa 90) are interchangeable, with the important footnote that those from a 140 have SAE threads and those from a 240 have Metric. A friend of mine has done this swap with little difficulty a couple of times.

I am not 100% certain, but it would logically follow from this that the tailgate gasket and window rubber are the same too.

Maybe. In '73, Volvo started putting the heavy intrusion bars in the doors & the dashboard + and the climate control become heavier too. To compensate somewhat, they thinned out the sheetmetal & the glass. I would guess that you could use 245 rubber if you use it's glass too.

Yes, the later window was moved out on the new
gasket to hang the drip. It should work also.
I noticed butyl flex in the channels of the
gasket from the factory install, when I took
the glass out of my '71-145 for paint.
Same on 72 ES.
The bodymen recommended that I not disturb
the alloy center trim,so I flipped the gasket back,
took the glass out,and treated the window/seal as a unit.
I used Seapower rubber boat and fender cleaner
and preservative, and a burgundy scotch brite and tooth brush
to clean the channel, then fed it some spray silicone
from the cap with the toothbrush. Then installed it with a 4mm
windsurf nylon cord. I am hoping the silicone swelled it up enough
to seal, but it hasn't rained here yet.
Yes, tail gate seal is same however silicone may soften it enuf to seal.
Hard to install esp around upper corners, had to heat-gun,
and bend tip of plastic trim 'bone' to hook it into channel.
1 to hold it up 1 to stuff with door on.
Door seals are same too, poached them from an 86/244-DL
IPD ones were way fat and doors wouldn't close at all properly.
Caveat Emptor OEM Rules.

Post back,if you have questions, I have a friend in the paint buisness.
REALLY Love My 145-S

Tailgate gasket material 140-160 1970

The door and tailgate seals were made of a different compound on 140s and 240s. The 140 ones are inferior, perhaps made of a latex based material, as are those of all earlier models. They get hard and start to crumble with age. 240 ones are a direct fit, and are much more durable. They are made of a good quality synthetic rubber. The 140 gaskets are a solid strip that relies on the compressibility of the rubber itself to provide the seal. The 240 ones are tubular in section.

Thanks for the input.
I'll look for the 245 gasket. Will no doubt be easier to find anyway.
Sounds like it will be a dealer part only?
Or perhaps it is a common cross section. The search continues.....

Junkyard, there's gotta be a bajillion 240 wagons in there. That's what I did a few years back. Just threw the rubber gasket in there from a newer wagon.
