Simons Sport exhaust 120-130

The old OEM type exhaust dropped a hanger. The local mechanic who normally just welds a repair felt that the rest of the system was now a bit weak so it wouldn't make much sense to strengthen one area only to have the next weakest spot break fairly soon.

I decided to order the sport kit from Skandix as several folks here have posted positive results with them. Unfortunately, the kits were on backorder and my daily driver was dragging tailpipe. Swedishtreasures had a Simons sport exhaust system in stock so I went for it.

The kit fit great and sounds a little throatier but not too loud at all. It was soon discovered that going over bumps at high speed caused the long resonator to bang against the frame below the rear footwell. :-( The only point of flexibility that could really be changed was the rubber double O support in front of the rear wheel well. I pulled one of the Simons rubber donuts and cranked in one of the smaller donuts from the old exhaust.

Took her out for a test drive over an old, hilly, pothole filled road. No more banging! The additional tension from the smaller rubber donut appears to keep the resonator from hitting the frame.

The larger exhaust definitely provides more top end power. Speed used to drop 10 mph on a long uphill highway grade on the way to work. Not only can speed be maintained now, but a bit of accelleration was managed. Oh yes!

No changes were made yet to the carb settings. Guess it makes sense to check though.

Best regards,

Joe M in WV

Sweet! Good to hear a great review. Thanks for that.

Regarding the carbs, as Phil says, you might be fine, because maybe you were running a little richer than neccesary. Anywho, check it out, and have fun!

Oh, and yes, as Phil said, the Skandix exhaust is the Simons. Here's what I got from Matthias through Ebay/Skandix when I got my 142's exhaust: http://www.ovtuners.org/gallery/klrexhaust

Just in case there's any confusion, the sport exhaust sold by Skandix (and also IPD) IS the Simons.

I also had to skew the center hanger as far as I could, and still could not get it to stop banging entirely. Solution was to fab a rudimentary bump stop attached to the floor.

I wanted this car to be pretty quiet, so I replaced the rear muffler with a "universal" Thrush turbo. I was able to tuck this up into the body so it's almost invisible from the outside, and added a chrome downturn as a tailpipe -- fits just below the bumper. I have not noticed any difference in performance from that swap, and it is less grumbly.

Depending how restrictive your old exhaust was, you may need to tweak the carbs a tad richer. If it's not hesitating or surging, it's probably fine as-is.

What did you use for a bump stop? It would have to adhere well to the undercoating and stand up to high temps.

I had first tried wedging in some lead came left over from a stained glass project between resonator and frame. Bad idea. The direct transmission of exhaust note into the cabin was way too LOUD. Fortunately the lead fell out after going over a couple of bridges on the highway.

What did you use for a bump stop?

A cut down old torque rod bushing from a 544 -- pretty much just a rectanglar hunk of hard rubber. It contacts the bracket, not the pipe, so it doesn't get really hot. So far so good, anyway.
