740 Cruise Wiring - 2nd Posting - Please 700

Good Morning;
I still cannot get the cruise on my ’92 740 to work. The on-board diagnostics say no speed sensor input. The FAQ’s say to look for the yellow sensor wire at the speedo cluster. I cannot find it. My Mitchell manual wiring diagrams say that the cruise speed sensor wire is green/orange and there is a green/orange wire at the cruise module but again it is nowhere to be seen at the speedo cluster. Are there any differences between the cruise wiring on the early and later series cars?

    1992 was the very last year of the 740. Wiring colours change over the years. The FAQ reference may only apply to earlier. The common config was a single push-on wire (yes, yellow) to connector 'E' on the back of the dash. HOWEVER... you may be hunting down a non-problem. Fuel injection and cruise tests performed on a stopped car will ALWAYS return a "no speed signal" code.

    Check the common stuff. Pull up on brake pedal when engaging cruise. A binding vacuum dump switch will cause pedal to not return fully. Ensure that the hose is still connected to the switch. Do your brake lights work? Thay are part of the safety circuit and the bulb-out will not come on if all bulbs are out.

    Vacuum hose from servo (engine) to pump (below master cylinder) - either end could have split. Lastly, with engine off, remove hose from servo and depress diaphragm with two fingers until the throttle is pulled partway open. Place another finger on the rear vacuum port where hose was. While keeping port closed, release the diaphragm and see if it keeps the throttle open. A torn servo bellows will not hold vacuum and will release immediately.

      Hello;
      I have already checked all the items you mentioned. I ran the diagnostics on the way home work the other day and again on my way home from E-test (it passed, yay !!) this afternoon. I plugged the diagnostic wire into position 2 on the B block and ran 'er home. I had aboout 16 KMS to play with it and when I got home, it showed no speed signal. 80-100 KPH all the way.
      So, you say I have a yellow wire to look for, that narrows it a bit, I'll get under the dash again and take a look. As I bought the car for my daughter and now it has passed the E-test I will be turning the car over to her tomorrow. So it will be a while before I will be able to get to it again.
      By the way, the car needed a new catalytic converter to make 'the grade' on its E test today. Now it is soooooo clean it squeaks !! Off to the licence bureau tomorrow and shed its North Carolina transit plate.

      Best Regards and many thanks;

        You misunderstood on two important points:

        I did not say you should be looking for a yellow wire... I said that earlier models used it but, the colour code AND the single pushon wire for cruise control may both differ by 1992 model year.

        And now for the really important one; once you've stopped the car - you are going to get a no speed signal when you check the system. It has nothing to do with the trip you made beforehand. 0 km/h = zero speed signal. Period. If you absolutely think this is the answer to your no-cruise, you'll have to place jackstands under each rear axle tube so you can safely run the rear wheels up to speed.

          Hello;
          I'll check it out again, once I get the car back. My daughter has it now, it will be a few weeks before she comes home again.

          Regards and thanks;
