Hello all,
Just curious, the gentleman has a 92 245 with 46,000 miles in sunny Florida, it appears he's taking offers 7,000 or OBO, what do you guys think, is it worth it?
I could be very interested in it but the tint and the hubcaps he put on it would have to go....LOL, I would hate to replace my 91 245SE with 160k because I really love this car, but it sure would be nice to snag one with really low miles. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks in advance

Volvo prices are very regional, so you have to discount opinions re: what a car is "worth"....in FL $7K for a nice low mileage 240 wagon is not a high price....I've seen them go $8 to $10K. FL is a good state to shop, no rust issues, low mileage cars (Snowbirds only drive half a season), and often older drivers who are meticulous about upkeep and maintenance. I agree that there are limited opportunities to buy end of run (92-93) low mileage 240 wagons. I believe that the prices for these cars will continue to increase. They have a Cult Following in some parts of the country and the 92-93 is "Best of Breed".
Good Luck,
Chris

Humm interesting comments. But why the negativity? If you want to know about the car ask the owner.
A little over “1K to bring it up to snuff” has been spent (new timing belt, AC Comp & Cond., tires, etc…it is sorted out). The service book has been signed; carfax can give you the history. It was owned for about 5 month by a Volvo certified mechanic with 11 years experience before he lost his storage and sold it to me (was that or his 850 R).
As for not buying cars in state with out safety and emission test. Well I lived in two states that had safety inspection and they were jokes. And A State run emission test would not be anything that would make good indication of engine condition. Besides would you rather have a car from the salty emission testing state of IL or a rust free car in FL? Rust kills cars not bad emissions.
Those Hubcap BTW are Volvo’s and not auto zone. They wouldn’t have been my first choice (i didn't buy them) but there they are and I do believe that they are removable. As for the tint it is a great job. Where you like it or not is another thing. Can be removed but I kind of like it, gives it even more of a brick shape and works well with the dark blue. Also if you drove in south Florida in a car with a Swedish interpretation of AC and big windows you would come to appreciate it.
As for the price? Well it does say OBO. And yes there is a difference between a 46k car and 100k. Buy it to find out ☺. In the end it’s supply and demand. The number of 240 out there with under 50K can’t be more then a handful. So if there is demand for it then it will sell for a premium. There are tons of 240 with over a 150k so yeah they are cheap. In the end I’m not in a big hurry to sell her. She is kind of like the ugly girl that your mom made you take to the dance and as the evening gets on you start to like her personality. Next thing you know your hitched with a kid. In other words I may keep it. It really is a great 240. Is it “perfect”, no it’s a 14 year old car using 30+ year old technology? Fun nonetheless.

Car sold BTW to a great couple that could see the value of the car. This is there 3rd 240 wagon and I am happy to have found her a good home.

Ignore the miles, yours is sorted out.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
And as Sven says, add 1K to bring it up to snuff.

Pass on it.
It's from Florida where they don't have state emissions testing and safety inspections. The car isn't worth $7,000 because of that. Look for a southern car that has state inspections and emissions testings.

hi all
with a properly maintained red block i would get one with 150,000 miles and save 4 or 5 grand, then run up another 200,000 miles and by then you have a old rust bucket.
my one cents worth.
good luck

There's a lot to be said for that. Many times I've wished I had shopped around, bought my car for half the price and had the rest of the money for modifying it.
Anyway, to a 240, what's the difference between 50k miles and 100k when you may have a 500k mile car?

I agree with scorron. Get a detailed history of the car's repairs and preventive maintenance. Ask to have it inspected by a local Volvo mecehanic or dealer first. If there are mechanical issues, ask the mechanic for a ballpark estimate on correcting it, then consider that amount if and when you decide to agree on a selling price.
Even if that inspection cost $100, it's good insurance and will cost less than $7,000 for a potentially unknown history.
Those aftermarket tints are usually crap and perhaps illegal in some states. I had an old Volvo with a similar tint and it looked awful.

What colour is your SE and how much would you want for it? I could be interested in a white one.

83 245GL ... just sold. Left with only the 84 244GL and 85 245DL.

My only question would be, Why does a perfect "Volvo time capsule" like this, only driven by an elderly couple, have window tinting and autozone hubcaps?
I'd rather pay someone a quarter of the price to rebuild my engine if I wanted a low-mile 240. And I don't care how few miles the car has on it, it probably has 14 year old shocks and struts that are shot.
I don't want to be unfair to the seller or suggest that it's an unethical pratice, but I'd say he bought the car for significantly less, then put a bunch of money into it and decided he wanted something else. Now he will (and who would expect him to do otherwise?) try to make back all the money he spent on it and maybe a little for his time.
I'd pass. I bought my '93 from a dealer, all original - good and bad to that - in the middle of a city where a sandwich costs you $9, with 110k miles and a recent paintjob for rather less than he wants.

Go for it...
there aren't too many 90+ with low km's like that for sale.
IMHO around 5grand would be a good deal.
hubcaps? bah, get virgo's or something on it.
