VW size tire on the space saver rim ? 900

I remember something about a narrow size tire fitting on the special, space- saver spare rim. Does this work only for the 240 and not the 940? If a full size tire will fit, what size ?

Thanks.

Al full size spare tire fits in the 700/900 900

    This is a 195/65R15 tire.

    Dear Philip,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. I doubt it is safe to mount a narrow-track, full-size tire on the steel rim used for the spare tire.

Having one tire of a different width:
    (a) will produce uneven stopping,if used on the front wheels, even in dry conditions (the tire's footprint will be smaller than the other, wider tires)
    (b) will produce less traction if used on a rear wheel, especially in wet conditions, and may be problematic during hard braking.

Condition (a) will mean that the side with the narrow tire will stop more slowly, causing the car to pivot. Condition (b) may mean fishtailing, when stopping under adverse conditions.

It is better to get a full-width steel rim (with round holes) and put on it a full-width tire, than to try to re-use the steel rim designed for the limited service spare. The cost of a good, used steel rim is low. The cost of fixing damaged cars and bodies is high.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

This is excellent advise for 200 series; unfortuntely, a standard "full size" tire & rim won't fit the spare compartment on a 7/9.
Having used my 165-15 spare a couple of times(once in the front, once in the rear), I can say it has NO adverse effect on handling uder normal conditions. My normal tires are 215-50-15, so it would be hard to find a greater width mismatch.
It is a "spare" after all, for temporary use.

        Dear McDuck,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Because the original factory-supplied limited service spare tires are well over a decade old, I wouldn't trust my life to them. Indeed, on a 940 I imported from Louisiana (long pre-Katrina), the unused spare tire had cracks so big, I could see the steel cords!!!

I replaced these out-of-date, limited-service spares with standard tires mounted on standard Volvo steel wheels. These units are taller - and when laid into the spare tire well under the wagon's lockable storage compartment - do slightly reduce the storage space.

I had thought Philip planned to mount on the spare tire rim (with square holes) some tire narrower than factory specification. I think that would be unsound. If the replacement tire has the same footprint as the regular tire, I doubt there's a potential problem. The factory limited-service spare wheel seems pretty robust.

Even so, getting a used-but-still-true steel wheel shouldn't be "mission impossible."

        Yours faithfully,

        spook

This is incorrect. I've had a full size wheel and spare tire for years now. See above.

A 165-15 tire will fit on a 15" donut rim.
This IS a full size tire.

A 165-??-15. Discount tire lists them by their profile also.

      Thanks

Call it an "80" series. The VW used a 165R15 in later years (i.e. after switching to radials from the 5.60-15 and 6.00-15 bias ply tires used previously). Old 122 and early 140s used these sizes too. Wagons and 164s of different years called for 175R15- try finding THAT one.

SImilarly the 240 wagon calls for a 185R14. Again it's a high-profile tire, so figure it as an "80". The larger sidewall section equals more load capacity.

I'd say using a "VW size" 165R15 on the spare rim is fine, as long as it's a decent tire. Other options are probably 185/65R15, and 195/60-15. They may raise up your rear carpet, they may not. Depends how bowed in it is.
