Poly TAB installation 200 1988

I have the Poly trailing arm bushings for my 240 wagon, and the IPD removal tool.

One question, does the chamfered outside diameter of the outer sleeve go to the differential side or wheel side of the brackets?

I have not had anything apart yet, but know that one end of the outter sleeve does have this chamfer. I also noticed a chamfer on one of the bushing halves which fits in the chamfered end of the sleeve. I read through the small page of instructions but it was not clear to me.

Any other tips are also welcome. I have done some bushing work (torque rods) but appreciate the advice of those who have done the work.

Thanks

Mike

When I do the stock TABs I press them in from the center of the axle outward. So If you bought the Sleeves for your Poly's I would do the same. After it is preessed in, The tapered end should be closest to the tires.

Many people do not buy separate sleeves, they cut and burn the beat up rubber of the Stock TABs and push the Poly's into those.

Thanks Tony,

I bought these polys from IPD, they include the outer shells now with the bushings.

I was confused about which way to install them. I spent considerable time removing the rubber from the torque rod bushings so I am hoping these will be less of a chore with the tool. I considered building my own tool but the price of rental seemed less than the time required to build it.

I'll report back later today after the job is finished.

First, poly bushings go inside the old shell. So you don't need to press out the big axle bushings unless you really want to, to make removal of the rubber easier. Apparently you can just heat the shell of the bushing with a propane torch to loosen the bond of the rubber and then knock it out. Haven't done it myself yet. But I have pressed out a bushing with a homemade version of the Volvo tool

This is the drivers side bushing. Tapered edge goes towards the wheel, so press it out towards the differential.

hello mike,

there's a lot of help available.

try this site.
http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1007101

remember to reverse the tool when you do the other side. study the tool setup in the 5 pcitures and understand it. i put the tool backwards (after waiting months after i replaced the driver's side tab), and bent the tab. i had to buy another tab.

very doable with the tool and such an improvement in the ride.

Poly TAB installation--oops sorry, different removal process. 200 1988

sorry mike,

i was thinking of the standard rubber tabs, which i outlined when removing the whole tab.

i believe the poly tabs uses the old tab shell which has a different removal process--need to only remove the interior stuff. may be easier with the tab in place.

i don't have any experience with poly tabs.

i did read that some people preferred the regular rubber tab over the poly (too stiff) but other rear poly bushings are just fine (torque rod bushings, panhard bushings.

regards,
byron
