sorry hope to clear things up, i m looking for the Big 11.25 " brakes, not the jumbo 1'' brakes, i drive a 1987 non ABS wagon, and was wondering what cars the 11.25 inch brakes come on, and if i can simply grab teh caliper brackets and teh bigger rotors, use my calipers, is it as simple as that?
, BtW i have girling calipers

The important question is whether your car was converted to two piece hubs or not. If you do, then you CAN do what you're asking. The Girling calipers used on the 10.5 and 11.25 inch rotors are the same except for the mounting bracket - removing two bolts at the strut and the two slider pin bolts will separate the casting you need.

Most 1988 to 90 ABS equipped cars used the larger rotors but some had the Bendix calipers. '89-90 non-ABS used both diameters. You'll have to peek at them.

1991-2 non-ABS 740 & 940 used the 11.25 setup with only Girling clampers.

Erik,

Check the 700/900 FAQ. There's a section about upgrading the brakes on your car. I've been reading through it to figure out what I need to do to switch my '84 to the bigger rotors.

The "jumbo" brakes are 11", not 11.25". The larger rotor is 22MM thick and goes with dual-piston calipers used to 1990. Similar setup was continued to 1992 for non-ABS (dual hoses).

1991 and later 740/940 ABS, all 960 use 11" x 26MM with single piston Girling.

You will need the calipers, unbolted at the strut - and the rotors. Hoses and hubs are the same so don't grab them.

You can tell which type by looking through the wheel (if it has them). Count the semi-circular cutout in the caliper casting. 2 cutouts = 2 pistons = thinner rotors. Single half-moon cutout is what you are looking for.

Your car must be 1988 or later, or else you will need the struts too, but there's a catch. You'll need 1988 hubs or your ABS won't work right. 1989+ hub use a different interruptor wheel.

My car is an '84 760 T, so could I just find caliper brackets and hubs to swap my car to the unpgraded rotors? Would it matter if the parts came from an ABS car?

Thanks,
Dave

The hubs wont work on an '84. The 700 series used tapered wheel bearing until 1987. From 1988 they used a sealed double-row ball bearing that requires a different diameter and shape spindle (part of the strut assembly). If you have a non-ABS car - the original calipers have dual hoses. ABS uses single hoses.
