OBD code: Camshaft position sensor signal fault 900

I just downloaded a check engine error code from my 1993 960.

It is listed as: Camshaft position sensor signal fault

The car runs very rough first thing in the morning, if you let it warm up its fine. This error occured one morning I did not let it warm up, it started spluttering and the Check Engine light came on...

Any ideas?

I haven't actually had to work with mine except to take it off and re-install when I changed the cams.

This is an optical sensor I believe and it is usually in a almost fully sealed chamber. However, if the rear oil seal on the cam lets go it could get very dirty in there. Also the connector parts tend to get brittle with age. Check these to issues before you replace it.

If the cam seal is gone and there is oil in there, it would be best to have the dealer replace it as it takes a special tool to install the seal in that limited space. Actually the tools are not that expensive and it might be worth buying them like I did.

Change it. The ECM goes in default mode when no signal is present. Just did mine last week.
