refurbishing seatbelt handles 1800

I have the seatbelt housing from an 1800 in my Amazon, so I thought I'd post here. The red release handles are pretty scratched and faded, so I want to know the best kind of paint to use to refresh them. If anyone has done this and has a make/paint code to quote that would be excellent. My wife said paint them with nail varnish, which seemed like a joke, but could this be as effective as paint? Thanks for any suggestions.

Tom

If you're talking about the small plastic red ends...what I did to mine was scrape off the top layer of crumbling plastic then sanded them down with coarse sandpaper, then finer and finer until I ended up using 1200 grit and way too many hours later a perfectly smooth and new looking red bit.

    Cheers

I don't know what the "best" is for a seat belt latch, but maybe some type of engine paint would be durable enough. Seat belt latches seem to take a real beating.

I used POR-15 on a few engines and found it leaves a hard smooth finish that seems to hold up well under the hood. Maybe that or some other brand can be applied to your latch.

Although they are both lacquer based, I think it would stand up to abuse better than nail polish.

I was under the impression that POR-15 required a top coat to protect it from UV rays, which cause it to deteriorate fairly quickly.

You are correct. The catalog does recommend covering UV exposed areas with a topcoat when using their POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint.

I was refering to POR-15 Engine Enamel.
