Hitch drawbar 240 200

Hi again,
local junkyard have a 240 hitch assembly for me, but it's missing the drawbar (the part that fits into the square opening of the hitch and to which the ball attaches).
Question: does the Volvo hitch take a standard drawbar available anywhere? Or is it some special size that can only be bought from Volvo?
Thanks!

if it is a standard 2" box, you will need to get a special insert that is a few inches longer than the standard one, otherwise the ball won't clear the bumper. most rv and trailer shops carry the longer hitch inserts ( and they charge a bit more for them too )

You can take the hitch to the local hitch shop and have them make one from square tube that is what I did for my 1 7/8" as the factory hitch came with a 2" ball that way you only need to change the tube if you change trailers. If you need more info I can give you a length measurement.

Hitch drawbar 240 200

The hitch assembly comes from an 85 240, I am told. I haven't seen it yet, they are looking for the drawbar (thinking the owner may have left it in the trunk or backseat). I assume it's the 1.25in variety (have seen a couple on Ebay that were advertised as such). Good idea about buying one and trying it out before picking up the hitch. And also, to make sure I get the mounting hardware that came with it.
Thanks a lot!

i bought my hitch off ebay couple years ago and turned out it was made by reese. the opening is 1.25", not 2" (i always thought there were only 2 sizes, 1.25" and 2"). anyway, since you plan on using the one at the pnp, you will need a drawbar anyway. go to your local trailer hitch/camping store and buy one in whatever size you think the one at the pnp is. then go to the hitch itself and see if it fits. if it doesnt, then it may indeed be a wierd one. in that case take the drawbar back to the store and thank them very much. but if it does fit, then you leave the pnp with complete set ready for install to your brick.

If you should decide to purchase the hitch be sure you retain the long bolts and nuts that are installed through the trunk. These are longer than the ones that come with the car and can be difficult and time consuming to source.

Depends on the year! Important .... 200

You didn't say what year it came from. It makes a big difference.

I've had a slew of Volvo hitches (the older, uniquely Volvo round tube style) on my cars that all had a standard US size 2x2 inch receiver, and you can fit into it any US-standard draw bar (insert) from a boat or camper trailer shop.

But I also once bought from a Volvo dealer (and returned) a newer hitch (the one with the square tube that looks like a "draw-Tite" or Reese-brand hitch) that had a weird receiver size -- it was neither the US-standard 2x2 or the smaller standard size that you see on minivans. Instead, it was a unique size, in between the 2x2 and the mini sizes -- and I didn't want that because I wanted a second draw bar (I have two boats, and their trailers take different balls) and the dealer told me that there are no more of them available separate from the hitch in their national warehouses. So if you lose it (or have it stolen), the hitch becomes useless.

Measure the receiver's size very carefully before you buy it -- the weird one "looked" like a standard 2x2, but it wasn't when you measured it.

Good luck.

I'll go look at the hitch tomorrow. The guy told me it's big and heavy (they took if off the car). They couldn't find the towbar for it. He said the received hole is square but larger than 1 1/4". I'll go measure it. I have a feeling, based on what you said, that it may be that odd-ball Volvo size, not quite 2", in which case I wouldn't want it for the reasons you indicated.

Depends on the year! Important ....long bolts.... 200

If you get the hitch, read rstarkie's post about the long bolts.

Those are next to impossible to find separate from a hitch, and they are absolutely necessay to mount to hitch to the car. They are like 8 inches long, and threaded all the way up. Metric size and Grade 8.

Good Luck,

Bob
