changing differential oil how-to ? 200 1992

Hi all,

So I decide to change the oil in my diff. (it's been 250000km, so it couldn't hurt ;-). Buy the oil, warm up the diff, crawl under => where's the drain plug???

I found the fill plug (seemed to be overfilled-slighltly- from the factory, or my garage isn't exactly level). But how do I drain the bloody thing?

For now I filled up again and snugged up the fill plug. Ready to try again with a little help from the ol' Board.

TIA,

DbVdb

I'd like to pass on a bit of well tested info on differential oil.
A head mechanic with UPS told me that the entire fleet of about 100,000 vehicles had their differential oil changed to synthetic oil. This was after testing it. They documented a 10% increase in mileage with this change. I decided to try it on my '88 240 and I did gain a 10% mileage increase.

If yours doesn't have a drain plug, you could get yourself a siphon type pump and suck it out via the only plug that's there. I did it recently on my 1800 and it worked fine. Just have to be patient as it takes a few pumps to get it all out.

It's under the axle. not on the side like many cars. Allen Key Head I think.
The first and only time I went to the Dealer for the 'FREE' 500 mile lube change, they managed to mangle the crap out of it. Now I have to take the rear cover off when I change mine.

There's a ? from a guy asking how to do it when there's no drain plug.
Plus plenty tips on rear diff lubing in general.

On mine, there is no apparent drain plug, but I discovered by accident that undoing the lowest cover bolt drains the oil.

I had one drain plug and it got rounded after lots of effort. loosened lower 4-5 differential cover bolts and stuck a screw driver in the crack. worked fine. Then I used Mobil 1 75W90 and used a long 1/4" 6' pipe to fill it up.
