960 engine swap tricks and shortcuts? 900 1995

Hi all,
I am considering seriously swapping my 1995 960 engine this weekend. I have a beautiful 64K mile engine from a 1997 to install. I remember some change was made that I'll need to deal with, but I don't remember what it is. The newer engine just had the timing belt done 1K before the crash that ended the car's life, so I am not worried about that. Any potholes to avoid. I've done some pain in the neck swaps and this doesn't look too tough. Any help is appreciated.

What changes will I need to make on the 97 engine to work in the 95 car? I seem to recall something but don't remember.
Thanks,

the oil cooler mount was changed somewhere on the 960, i forget when. i got bit when the owner supplied a used motor and the yard hauled his old 1 off before i got the car. he made lotsa trips getting stuff off that old motor of his. i ALWAYS get the same year donor as the patient, no hassles. good luck, chuck.

IIRC,

You may want to consider swapping ECM's. I don't believe it's necessary but may make things a little easier.

The 95 is OBD1, Motronic 1.8.

The 97 is OBDII and Motronic 4.4 I believe.

The 95 has an EGR valve, the 97 does not.

They have differernt air intake sensors.

I may be wrong but I think the 95 has one ECT sensor and the 97 has two. (one for the gauge and one for the ECM).

Can't think of any other differences at the moment.

Good luck and have fun.

Also, the 97 has both pre and post cat O2 sensors, the 95 does not.

Plan on pulling the motor and trans as a unit...sounds like more work but is is not in the end.

It helps to have an engine tilter for the hoist so you can adjust the horizontal angle of the engine in order to get it out and to replace it.

Cut a piece of plywood to fit behind the radiator to protect it from accidental damage.

Replace the motor mounts while you are in there.

Took my brother and I 1 day to do the entire R&R.
Good luck.

Engines are the same. Injectors, wiring and sensors are all different.

Swap them from the 95. Take the radiator out, lots more room.

Hunt shade, stay hydrated,it took one week to change mine.
